I hope the government delivers with this bold promise, given that my trust in the current government is at cliff-edge, but also do something about the quality of white goods (kitchen appliances), and fire resistance and retardation too.

And the welfare of the disabled (sigh).

So uhh... this is highly interdasting.

This is the dangerous socialism we were warned about.

It might be the Greater London Authority (Labour-controlled) actually that has done this, so fair enough.

I think this is a wonderful thing. At least those apartments will be used as opposed to just being owned by such rich dude and it sits with no lights ever on and no one ever there.

I'm glad Maria and Nick gave their names to the paper so we know who to send to the gulags first when Jezza takes power.

You spend a couple million pounds on a piece of property the government puts low income housing around you, it destroys your property value. Of course you are going to be pissed.

Maybe treating housing like a commodity is a problem.

Seems reasonable to offer nice amenities and living facilities to those adversely affected by one of Britain's Post WW2 greatest tragedies.

How else do you treat it? Housing has been a real good since ancient times.

But investment and speculation on the value of housing hasn't. And that is a major factor in the unaffordability of modern housing.

I mean - you have a point and I agree in part. We can't really do anything to make the most awesome housing equally accessible for everyone. That's ludicrous. But I think that in countries, such as the UK, or cities such as London, where housing is extremely expensive, it is a prudent idea for the government to intervene and subsidize more quality public housing and whatnot.

Yes, it is a little bit costly, but I'd rather have slightly higher taxes than an underclass with little to no access to adequate housing.

Isn't this just a temporary measure, the whole "lets relocate victims of a mass tragedy into quality housing?"

If so, I'd expect the community to respond with more compassion than distrust. And if it turns out to not work, then other measures can be taken.

Sure it has, nyc was built on land speculation. The size of the international market. (If you were a saudi arabian prince, a london or new york apt is a very safe investment) is new, but it has always existed here and at least in London as well

. Part of our issue here is that it is so expensive to build here that only luxury development gets done without massive tax subsidies.

Which is a colossal problem for people not on six-figure incomes who live in those cities.

They're describing the apartments as "new social housing" and the GLA allegedly told workmen to shush about the work they were doing there. Seems a permanent move.

It's not even easy on a 6 figure income. Public housing here has not gone very well, so I don't know what the answer is, but your not wrong.

You have knocked down a million pounds of investment, if they try and sell their property they in all likelyhood would not be able too, as the mortgage will be sustantially more than the price they will be able to get with the poor or middle class folks in the building.

They are not going to be happy, to expect otherwise is silly. (Even if we all agreeded this was the proper thing to do).

Might not be anything, but King's College Hospital has confirmed it treated three people from Grenfell Tower with the antidote for cyanide poisoning.

That'd be just the icing on the cake. What could make your day worse when your house is burning down around you? Here you go mate, bit of cyanide for you.
