What is your favorite music genre and political leaning?

Postby Keshetar » Tue Jun 06, 2017 9:55 pm

I hope I'm allowed to post this stuff.

I want to know NS members favorite music genre and what your political leanings/beliefs are. I want to know if someone of a certain political leaning tends to favor certain types of music.

I guess I'm a weird one. I'm a music nut in general. Right now, I'm into today's pop music (think Gwen Stefani, Carly Rae Jepson, Hayley Williams, etc.) and I always gravitated somewhere in the right at different periods of time.

I listen to national anthems on a regular basis (mostly foreign), and I'm social democrat.

Indie rock (Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Portugal the Man) and progressive/hard rock (Pink Floyd, The Doors, David Bowie, Yes), also punk rock (The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones).

I'm a left leaning populist of sorts.

Edit: Totally forgot to mention, I love some sorts of rap (Kid Cudi, older Kanye, NWA, Skizzy Mars, Kendrick).

And if you couldn't tell by my nation name, David Bowie is by far my favorite artist.

....okay?

Maybe this is a sociology experiment related to musical and political perspectives/preferences or something.

I think the music genre I tend to attach myself more towards is pop, except in the vein of it being indie. (Like, the style of it and all, not them being without a label)

And I'm a social democrat with maybe some asterisks.

I like rock and electronica/house (not EDM, that music sucks). Most of the music I listen to has either a psychedelic tone, or an experimental tone, or both (except some classic and 2000s rock). I also listen to a little bit of West Coast gangsta rap.
I am a left libertarian, more specifically an anarcho-communist.

Music Genres: Erm... if I had to list the Top 3, in alphabetical order, they would be Classical Music (Including a few songs from the Baroque and Romantic Periods that aren't technically Classical Music, and I know this because I took Music Appreciation in 9th Grade...), Disco... maybe, or maybe I'll go two decades back and listen to some Doo-Wop. Maybe I'll go a decade before that and listen to some Big-Band/Swing music... possibly?. Although, I have a fondness for Rock Operas... Oh dear, this is quite unorganized. How unpleasant.

Political Views: Erm... I don't wish to seem impolite, but possibly some odd fusion of Democracy, Socialism, and Technocracy that really only makes sense if you possess my particular set of neuroses. Possibly. My "gut", so to speak, says: "Maybe...".

monarchy system of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth | The corporatist/technocratic philosophy of Henri de Saint-Simon | The communitarian
ideological framework of the Singaporean People's Action Party | "New Deal"-style societal regimentation | Kantian/Mohist/Stoic philosophy

Studies have been done before and results are relatively of little value - I remember one that said conservatives have a narrower taste in music in general than liberals.. but it's at best a gross simplification. I mean what can one deduce from, say, Republicans showing a liking for country music.. music taste is influenced by your social circle.. whoop-di-doo..

Yeah, that sounds like a stretch... I guess it's possible to argue that that narrower taste is somewhat linked to the notion that conservatives are the ones looking into the past, but the problem with that is that there's both the fact that people who would be considered "conservative" in political terms may actually be "liberal" in the older sense of the term and there's not much of a correlation between politics and your lifestyle (Though maybe that will be slightly less true in a future United States if people start placing more trust on political orientation for a person's actual opinions on politics, let alone their lifestyle, than it deserves)

Like, as far as I can tell, most of my politics currently comes from the Internet and most of the music comes from there as well, so... basically, it implies that a lot of my life was spent developed on the Internet or that maybe, somehow me being a social democrat means I like Gossamer more.

I can't say I have a favorite genre, rather I really like music which takes an aggressive and complicated approach to music. Animals as Leaders, Scale the Summit, Nails, Xibalba, Pelican, and KEN mode are the latest bands I've played according to my phone.

I'd argue I'm a moderate liberal. I'm a Pragmatist who's been influenced by Classical Liberalism. I'd point to men like Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Ayn Rand, Jimmy Carter, FDR, Konrad Adenauer, and Kim Dae-jung as influential in my political philosophy.

Im a socialist, as for musical tastes, eh.. i dont really have on genre that is my absolute favourite. I like a lot of Russian stuff from the 1910s-50s (i.e red army choir), same with american music from roughly the same period (thank you fallout), rock music, Classical stuff.

They are probably my top four.

Hard rock, heavy metal with a particular love for thrash. Megadeth and Guns N Roses are my two favourite bands. As for politics I'm a left-communist, with some trotskyist leanings.
