"It's a meme" in the same way conservatives say "It's just a joke" when confronted with having made an offensive statement.

Ah yes, "If you kill your enemy, they win"
congrats to the Ariana Grande concert and the people on the London Bridge for the big wins

Does it make it any better?
They are also something that actually happened. Calling them "a meme" doesn't suddenly make their trivialization okay, specially not when the meme seems to be primarily used, not to ridicule Pinochet a la Springtime for Hitler or like in Downfall memes, but in an endearing way.
Literally just a meme bruh.

Make of these numbers what you wish, I'm just a messenger this time.
Oh, no, you don't get to drop numbers and pretend that you don't mean anything by it. Be honest.

I'm becoming increasingly tired of Anglophone randos on the internet trivializing what was a horrifying tool of extermination used by an infamous tyrant to cement his power. You might think Pinochet's brutality is all fun and games from the distant comfort of your homelands, but to many of us South Americans it's about as funny as Auschwitz.
Leftists have gulag jokes, we have Pinochet jokes. Also I'll not that a considerable number of Chileans still like Pinochet. Hell, my old barber loved Pinochet. I wouldn't be surprised if she had a photo of him.

I see this more as a "you shouldn't take it so seriously, it's just a meme", not "you can't criticize it, it's just a meme".

I did not mention anything about whether we should kill anyone or not.
Perhaps it's up to the police to work out some kind of better procedures without overstepping important boundaries.
It's up to the populace to not be reactionary and hysterical.

I am sensitive. I have no trouble admitting to that, but me not finding "helicopter rides" funny doesn't make me humorless.

And some Germans still like Hitler, Berlusconi still loves Mussolini, and some Americans still support the KKK and fly the symbols of a rogue state created in defense of slavery. Horrible people often outlive the horrible regimes they supported.
