Do you smoke?

Postby Cabra West » Wed May 31, 2017 11:03 am

Since it's World No Tobacco day, I thought I'd ask.

Personally, I don't. Which is a bit unusual, statistically speaking, as I come from a family of smokers. My mother, my father, my grandfathers, one of my grandmothers (the other one was more into snuff - go figure!), most of my uncles and aunts, and consequently both of my brothers smoke or used to smoke.

One of my brothers gave it up a few years back, but my mother and other brother are still hooked.
I never really understood it - the smell has always put me off, for as long as I can remember. It may well be one of the reasons I'm not at all close with my family now, who knows?

But I'm curious - do you smoke? When did you start, and why? Do you want to give it up? I would imagine it's pretty tough.
And what are the laws around it where you are?
Here in Ireland, advertising it isn't allowed, you can't even display the logos in shops where cigarettes are sold. You cannot smoke in offices, public buildings, public transport, pubs, restaurants or hotels. So it's very easy indeed for me to avoid the smell and the smoke.

"I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, and as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged on to a half-submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature’s wonders: mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that’s when I first learned about evil. It is built in to the very nature of the universe. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior."

I try to limit myself to less than half a pack a day.
The mere fact that i pissed someone off either means i stood for something or i said something offensive.
in this day and age it's both.

I smoke, and started last year. I have no intention of giving up, but it'd probably best.

Not to mention, i'm slightly underage to buy them, so its a little hard to get my hands on them if i'm in certain shops.

I was tempted to bum one off my mates once, but I'd ran out of beer. By the time I'd got back from the bar, I didn't want one anymore.

No, but most of my adult relatives do.
I view smoking worse than drugs, and I would endorse a nationwide, very harsh crackdown on smoking in Britain.

Yes, I do smoke. Probably more than I should, but not like a pack a day or anything. That I just can't fathom. I met one guy who smoked 4 packs a day! I don't even understand how that's possible.

But yes, I do smoke. I like in America, and in my state of Florida, they are getting much more stingy on cigarettes, trying to make it a "Clean Air State". So smoking in restaurants, open bars, or wherever there is food is generally prohibited, with a few exceptions. Public areas is also illegal, however, its literally never enforced.

I don't, which could be why I'm so in favor of getting rid of it. If I could, I'd make the tobacco plant extinct so that smoking such products is a thing of the past. An entire taxable industry would get destroyed, but the savings on health and air pollution would be worth it.

Some people think it looks cool to smoke...

For instance, notice how in Tarantino movies when two people exchange tense and witty banter and there's the threat of a gunfight, sometimes one guy will suddenly pause to light and smoke a cigarette before making another Chill line...

Nope.

Hate the smell, and cigarettes are a waste of money (Cigars, cigarillos, and pipes are all much better cost wise).

The entire reason for buying cigarettes or using tobacco products is to get the nicotine. Once ingested, people want more because it is addictive and that is the lion's share of why they become a repeat customer or don't quit for a long time statistically speaking. It takes willpower to stop the habit once someone starts it.

I do smoke, and have for about a decade. Started when I was 18. Started with just a few cigarettes a day, and slowly moved up to roughly a pack a day.

Why would you want nicotine in the first place? What is the point of it? What does it do for you? Nothing.

Not entirely sure how people manage to afford to smoke in the UK anymore.

Never smoked. Never will. James VI & I was right to attempt to outlaw tobacco. It's done nothing good whatsoever.

I would like to know that myself. Tobacco has absolutely no point other than to affect peoples health.
