Roman Emperors

Postby Conserative Morality » Sun May 28, 2017 6:57 pm

Split from the Trump thread, let's talk Rome and Roman Emperors! First question: favorite emperor? Vespasian #1 and if you answer otherwise you're wrong. ;)

Why would you give Julian the Apostate his own option but not Marcus Aurelius? XD

Because there are only ten options available and Julian deserves a spot. He's in with the Five Good Emperors what more do you want?

I've always really liked Aurelian. Only reigned for 4 years I think, but won in the east and west to stabilize the security of the empire and started some economic reforms I believe to get the economy moving again.

Between the best emperors, would be split between the two great 'philosopher kings' Julian the Apostate and Marcus Aurelius.

In terms of favorite, it would be a tie between those two and Caligula. The latter mainly because of how much he humiliated the stuck up patricians.

Augustus probably was objectively the best.

Tiberius was good too and often criticism of him was over-exaggerated or outright fabrications.

Claudius I find I really like (almost on par with Augustus), and think he did a fine job after the nightmare of Caligula. Also, as somebody with some physical impairments myself, I find an affinity with him:)

Marcus Aurelius I find a bit overrated, but Aurelian was really good, and would've done better if he'd stayed longer, ending the Third Century Crisis was no small feat.

And I still wish Julian the Apostate had won. We were doing very well in the West until monotheism screwed everything up. We've still not gotten over that poison, and probably never will. But calling him 'the best' is a bit of a stretch/

Julian was a monotheist though, more in the Hindu sense than a Christian, but still a monotheist.

Julian the Apostate got his ass beat by the Sassanids, who were Monotheists, lmao.

Monotheism didn't screw anything up, and if you seriously think that, you need to read history books that aren't Edward Gibbon.

Nah, the traitors were the aristocrats who killed them. And then they whined when the Populares in future used violence against the Senatorial faction... Guess what? they started it.

The only people who started it were bandits trying to upset Rome's natural order. Sulla was divine vengeance.
