Any thoughts about the Scarlett Johansson thing?

It's one of those things that should not be an issue to begin with in Cyberpunk genres.

Only people who are not into cyberpunk are going to be offended by Scarlett Johansson appearing as the major, considering the cyberpunk genre is literally about having a high degree of technology available in the near future through radical progress without the hindrance of human experimentation being illegal and whatnot in most canon, or it being illegal, but not stopping corrupt megacorporations from doing it under wraps and coming with a high degree of customization for humans, even disposing of your own mortal flesh and bone and putting on a cybernetic body, hell, in many RPGs with Cyberpunk themes you can straight up upload your mind to the internet as an AI.

Taking that in mind, it only makes sense that SJ is not an issue from the get go, since the Major can pretty much take whatever kind of form she wants, given that she is basically a cyborg -- her brain has been put inside a cybernetic body, so the shape of the body is irrelevant for the major because her brain is being transplanted, not her body. So the controversy over the major being white is a null issue.

Main problem is that in the GITS universe... most of the Western World can't make or has extreme difficulty creating high level tech that's present in the franchise. WWIII kinda blew up or caused most western countries to become highly irradiated, leaving the Eastern World to make a large power grab (Especially in technology).

Hence, having a character look and sound Anglo-American doesn't really make sense, mainly because Japan is the leader in cybernetics and makes most of their cyborgs look Asian. (Granted, this is a bit different in the film, but still...) Also, it's a main point in the franchise that the Major only uses 1 specific Shell model, due to the fact that she believes that it looks like how she used to look like before her change. (And this is the same across all the media, excluding the American movie)

I don't really mind it, and I understand why they made the change, but it does get confusing when you look into the greater themes (Which I can go into a completely different discussion about) and history of the franchise.
