Yep. The claim is that there was a section of the island's waters where people could not take a dip in because it is infested with highly dangerous amoeba.

Yea. And I mean, it wasn't just the amoeba, but there were also apparently other issues:

In September 1989, the Orange-Osceola state attorney and a U.S. attorney in Orlando filed 16 charges against Cook and four other Discovery Island employees with a large number of allegations included the mishandling of vultures and other wild birds, the destruction of ibis and egret nests and the shooting of hawks and falcons.

According to Disney employees, the vultures attacked animals and defecated on a boardwalk, the hawks, falcons and owls attacked show pigeons and the egrets and ibises were noisy. Investigators found a metal shed measuring 20 feet long, 8 feet wide and 7 feet high with no windows, ventilation, water or perches. Old food, feces and feathers were on the floor. 19 vultures were in the shed at the time, one of them dead, though Cook told investigators that as many as 72 vultures have been kept in the shed at once. Jim Found, the manager of Discovery Island, told investigators that they even had discussed destroying the vultures before.

Asha Degree's case depresses me...
She was a little girl who, despite being scared of the dark and rain, went outside in the middle of the night during a storm.
She was then seen by multiple motorists on a North Carolina highway up to 2 kilometers away from her home.
The last time she was seen, she ran away from a car approaching her and into the trees.
It just makes me so angry.

To avoid depressing people who aren't interested in being sad, I'm going to spoiler this next part.

Belongings of the girl was found in a shed near the area she ran away to from NC 18.
Her backpack was found buried off of the highway a year after her disappearance in a plastic bag.

Nobody has admitted or been arrested after 17 years.

Somehow I started reading about the Murder of Dee Dee Blancharde on wiki a few weeks ago and that case really throws me for a loop. I feel bad for Gypsy for having to go through with it, although I don't support the murder of course; but, I also kinda feel bad for "Dee Dee" because she was probably suffering from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, of which she could've gotten some help with if someone had noticed.

This case isn't as sad as those missing persons (at least we know where everyone involved is), but I can't imagine growing up as Gypsy Rose. Her whole childhood she was forced to live a lie, and no one really believed otherwise.
