I blame Ethel here, for putting stereotypes into my head.

Heh, my mom was of the "I raised you now gtfo out" generation. She did not actually become a good cook till after I left and she started to enjoy cooking and not see it as a chore..

Now I miss grandma's cooking.

Thanks.

This is true. Uni is a full time occupation.

I know several people who did not have to pay rent at home whole studying.
But as soon as they got a full time job, parents expected a bit of rent while still living in the home.

I moved out soon as I graduated. Replaced heavily subsidized rent and bills with unsubsidized rent and bills. I hate the extra spending, but love my independence.

Yeah, but you did. In spite of your issues, you are working through them, and starting to succeed.

I would have loved to move out during college, it would have helped my social life greatly if I didn't have to spend over two hours a day on the commute alone (even though the distance between my school and my home is less than 10km - Philippine infrastructure, man).

I might probably boomerang back to my parents house if I break up with my current girlfriend - I can't pay the rent on my own. Moving in seemed like a good choice. Plus we got a dog out of it.

True, I've put a fair amount of hard work in to make the most of the opportunities I've been given, but I did largely stumble into those situations more by luck than judgement.

There was a point where I was long-term unemployed, believed I wasn't capable of being a productive member of society, and was very close to returning to living with my parents in the middle of nowhere to reduce costs. My relation with my parents at this time wasn't particularly healthy and it's likely I would have been discouraged from going into the "system" down there to avoid the potential of being spotted by a relative or one of my parents' associates.

As it happened, I was lucky enough that I found my current partner and then through the local jobcentre had a placement at my current workplace that I managed to convert into a temporary paid job and then move sideways through a number of departments for a year or so until I secured a permanent position. If the jobcentre hadn't found an ideal position, if I didn't have my partner provide both financial and emotional support in the early part and help me write my job application, without these I'd probably have gone home into a pretty unhealthy situation and be a complete mess today if I was even still around.

It's been a combination of my own effort and other people's support, but I'm not arrogant enough to fool myself that without the latter I'd have had the context that allowed the former to shine through, or that if my support network and current job disappeared I'd steam through it using the power of rugged individualism.

Anyone unravels if you pull the right threads hard enough. The work I've put in is making the knit a bit more secure over time, but some of the threads are always going to be a bit looser than the average - I'm not going to delude myself that I'm going to be a paragon of self-reliance or argue that everyone else can realistically be expected to be the same.
