If you read the comments section on the various clips, you'll typically find the fans of the book or the movie are two distinct groups. As for Paul Verhoeven, practically all of his American movies are subtlety criticisms of American Culture, so I think that fans such as myself focus on the aesthetics of the movie itself.
As for the 'aesthetics' the guns and armor of the infantry may as well be cardboard because thats what they look like.
