English language is ascendent, au revoir Académie française

The UK, the country I live in, released a decent song this year. I also like Moldova's.

But I have to say, some of the commentary by the hosts is pretty unbearable.

Wasn't a fan of Portugal, but there were worse songs I guess. I'm glad Moldova did well, at least.

I also really enjoyed Portugal's entry. Nice departure from the upbeat pop sludge that often does well.

So Portugal won. There song was very good. Also it helped that the song was in Portuguese and sang by a Portuguese. Many of the Eurovision songs were in english and song by non-english native speakers which unfortunately lessens the songs impact. If the song was bad to begin with then it lessen any possible impact even more.

Eh, quite a few well known songs in the world are sung by non-natives.

For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4b1wt3-zpzQ

Edit: or to stay in Eurovision terms: everything by ABBA :p

^ there, you said it!

Although I vehemently disagree with the fact that Portugal's song was even remotely decent. :p

I don't really mind if Australia participates... but it has to be in the right spirit. The reason people in Australia watch Eurovision is not because they want to hear great music. It's because they like to take the piss and make fun of the ridiculousness of the whole thing. Which is of course the correct spirit in which to approach the event, and one shared by most participating countries (a few places in the Balkans and Caucasus notwithstanding).

Problem is that the moment Australia participates, the whole chip-on-the-shoulder thing kicks in and Australia absolutely has to be serious and competent and, ideally, win the thing. It would be completely unacceptable if someone were to take the piss regarding Australia! Which is a shame, because Australians are quite good at making fun of themselves as long as no foreigners are around.

So in short... send a freaking joke entry already. It's only been a couple of years, and I'm already sick of these somewhat competent singers going there to perform crowd-pleasing pop ballads.

The vanity and presumption of governing beyond the grave is the most ridiculous and insolent of all tyrannies.
