To be fair, they don't really have a lot of options. They can't really make any specific arguments on his behalf because 1. Trump apparently doesn't even bother communicating with his own staff about what he's thinking or doing, much less Congress, and 2. There is an approximately 100% chance that he will throw them under the bus by Tweeting the exact opposite thing 2 days later.

Pretty much this.

Vice President Mike Pence has hired outside legal counsel to help with both congressional committee inquiries and the special counsel investigation into possible collusion between President Trump’s campaign and Russia.

The vice president’s office said Thursday that Pence has retained Richard Cullen, a Richmond-based attorney and chairman of McGuire Woods who previously served as a U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia.

Who is currently President Pro-tem?

Speaking of, on the upside Trump continues to leave the Republican 'agenda', such as it is, gasping for air in his vacuum.

Tragic as the shooting at the Congressional baseball thing was, it would have been a golden opportunity for Republicans to move away from the Russia Investigation and focus on their legislative agenda, all Trump had to do was stay coherent and focused and say something Presidential about not letting the tragedy stop them from the business of improving the country.

But NOPE! Trump gotta Trump! Put the Russia Investigation right back at the top of the agenda and consume all available oxygen whining and moaning about how mean and unfair and hard his life is.

An American lobbyist for Russian interests who helped craft an important foreign policy speech for Donald Trump has confirmed that he attended two dinners hosted by Jeff Sessions during the 2016 campaign, apparently contradicting the attorney general’s sworn testimony given this week.

Sessions testified under oath on Tuesday that he did not believe he had any contacts with lobbyists working for Russian interests over the course of Trump’s campaign. But Richard Burt, a former ambassador to Germany during the Reagan administration, who has represented Russian interests in Washington, told the Guardian that he could confirm previous media reports that stated he had contacts with Sessions at the time.

“I did attend two dinners with groups of former Republican foreign policy officials and Senator Sessions,” Burt said.

Asked whether Sessions was unfamiliar with Burt’s role as a lobbyist for Russian interests – a fact that is disclosed in public records – or had any reason to be confused about the issue, Burt told the Guardian that he did not know.

Several media reports published before Trump’s election in November noted that Burt advised then candidate Trump on his first major foreign policy speech, a role that brought him into contact with Sessions personally.

Burt, who previously served on the advisory board of Alfa Capital Partners, a private equity fund where Russia’s Alfa Bank was an investor and last year was lobbying on behalf of a pipeline company that is now controlled by Gazprom, Russia’s state-controlled energy conglomerate, first told Politico in October that he had been invited to two dinners that were hosted by Sessions last summer, at the height of the presidential campaign.

Sessions, a former senator for Alabama who was chairman of the Trump campaign’s national security committee, reportedly invited Burt so that he could discuss issues of national security and foreign policy.

Trump should veto the new Russia and Iran sanctions. Fact is, the US senate is full of morons who needlessly back Saudi Arabia because they are bought.

Congress can override veto, and considering that the sanctions passed in the Senate almost unanimously, it doesn't look good for Trump to try to veto it and get away with it.

Well if they tried to they Dems would just drag it right back up and have an excuse for that saying he wanted to use this shooting as a distraction from the Russia investigation.

Let the US congress try to override it, I don't see any good reason to punish either Russia or Iran. These countries are stabilizing the middle east a hell of a lot more than the US currently is. Russian cooperation is an asset against ISIS and not a liability. The US refuses to ever go against Saudi Arabia and Qatar when these nations are the real troublemakers. There does not need to be any pro-Sunni bias. It would be for the best to finally get away from that.

Trump fired Comey in the most hamfisted and humiliating way possible on the same day multiple grand jury subpoenas were issued for Michael Flynn and his associates and the day before he had a no-US-press-allowed meeting with the Russian Ambassador.

Optics are a deep state lie created by the fake media!

Don't worry though, I doubt he'll veto, not because he actually knows or understands or really cares one way or another about geopolitics, but simply because sanctions will appeal to his fondness for portraying himself as a 'tough guy' leader.

The former he can't do: it is Congress which ties federal funding of roads to States having a higher drinking age (Democrats did that btw).
The second one I'm not sure. Is the smoking age higher or lower in some states?

Trump doesn't smoke or drink; it's doubtful he'll do anything, unless the breweries and tobacco lobbyists ramp up their game.
