The Kurds are actually the enemies of, and have fought with, many of the coalition forces Russia bombs. Kurds want a set up that neither the rebels nor the state want, and the Kurds work with both rebels and state on a case-by-case basis.

Probably. Seems to be the standard thing. We have seen this many time before.
Although rather than being part of an identifiable faction he could just have become Wahhabized in general, which seems to be pretty common too.
