Even though I'm a liberal, I feel like I've slightly shifted to the right in some of my beliefs about the economy and foreign policy recently. I still can't muster any support for Trump, but I like what he did in Syria, and I hope he does it to North Korea as well.

This might be vague at some points, because I'm uncertain about things.

I've always tried to proportion my beliefs to the evidence in a nuanced way, so consequently, I've always had points where I can admit the flaws of my own party and points where I can give credence to the other side. I was shocked, for example, by what I interpreted as a lack of responsibility over the Clinton e-mail scandal and the incessant false equivalence to Powell's administration. Additionally, as somebody who comes from a background of borderline poverty, I understood the emotional force and historical momentum of Trump's coalition, and anticipated that he would likely win based on the size of his crowds. I'm still mostly anti-Trump because I find him to be an irrational and dangerous force who fails to live up to my model of proper statesmanship, but he is also a mesmerizingly powerful political figure who skillfully navigates the line between reality and perception. Trump is a man who, despite not being particularly academic, understands the power of imagery and symbolism to how we construct our discourse. In a sense, he's learned how to create his own reality, but he could be applying these skills far more productively than he is now.

I'm taking a class on Austrian business cycle theory, which, while I haven't yet formed a full opinion on their school, opened my eyes to some very interesting arguments. The idea of methodological subjectivism undercuts left-wing notions of class oppression, and I'm trying to work out the tension between the two. I cannot, however, get in line with their non-interventionist philosophy. Recent events in North Korea and Syria have convinced me that many on the left are deluded about the kinds of enemies that we face today. For instance, many in the left oppose any kind of military intervention in Syria and North Korea. It's obvious that diplomacy in the DPRK has failed and will continue to fail, and thus, military action against their bipolar regime before they can threaten the United States is necessary. I am similarly surprised that many in the left fail to understand why we needed to bomb Asaad.

One term has ringed in my head to describe some of my positions: "suicidal civilization". I believe that many tenets of the left, if adhered to, would turn the West into a suicidal, irrational civilization. I strongly believe that anybody who doesn't affirm American constitutional democracy shouldn't be allowed in this country. Allowing such people into your borders is irrational and creates a suicidal civilization. This is why "extremely vetting" is necessary, but not just for Muslims, but for everybody--to guarantee we aren't ushering in our own demise through careless immigration policy. The same applies to our current zero-sum game with North Korea. Any society that will not take military action to prevent its enemies from developing nuclear weapons is a suicidal society.

Suffice to say, I don't think many on the left understand the immensity of the threats we face today.
