I disagree. If you couldn't split the individual from society, then there would be no individuals apart from society, nor any individuals who could move from one society to another. The obligations of groups do not necessarily impose an obligation on all members within that group.
You can split the individual from society but he will still be a complex product of society. Estrangement from society, though, unless it's in nature or God, generally causes the individual to slowly degenerate. Basement dwellers are a good example of this.
