This definitely sounds like attempted murder and not DV either way. You don't just let someone walk off free of charges after they beat them with a cricket bat and pour bleach into someone else's mouth, regardless of your relation to a person.
He didn't walk off free of charges he was given a noncustodial sentence based on several factors and when it became apparent that he was lying about one of them that was changed to a custodial sentence.
This was also not attempted murder, there is almost no chance of making that charge stick.
