The stuff that makes you was forged in the core of a star. That same stuff will later form the cores of mountains, trees, oceans, and volcanos. Right now, that stuff forms a neural network of emergent consciousness, so that same stuff would have a chance to comprehend how completely badass those first two facts are.

Nothing about this is "sad."

Do you worry about eternal damnation for not believing in the tens of thousands of other gods people have made up? No?

Well, it's like that. There is no evidence to support the existence of any god(s), so there is absolutely no reason to believe in any god(s).

In fact, we would be delusional to believe in any.

But remember that noy everybody here believes in the God we do, Gim. It might not do well to say such end-all statements as "without God, we wouldn't exist."

There really should be an informal fallacy for when people think they've won an argument by misunderstanding it. It pops up all the time. Case in point.

"Begging the question" is the name of a logical fallacy in which a statement or claim is assumed to be true without evidence other than the statement or claim itself.

When the person in question is already stating that God isn't real and by extension that it's possible to exist without God, saying "But without God you wouldn't exist!" isn't a comeback because the response only makes sense if someone already accepts that A) God is real, and B) That one can't exist without him, which they obviously don't. It's like saying, "But Goku could destroy your entire planet!" in response to someone saying Dragonball Z is fictional. You're essentially just shouting, "YUH HUH!!"

This is not a competition where winning or losing matters. You seem to be preoccupied with that.

A little off-topic here. #NotAMod

Also, no way do I believe in eternal damnation. When we die, no more of us exists, and therefore nothing to damn eternally.

That would explain all the believers knocking on my door, jamming literature in my mailbox, and telling me I'm damned to hell if I don't agree.

It's cause winning doesn't matter.

The logic (or lack thereof) in belief in God itself is directly relevant to the question of consequences (or lack thereof) of said belief.

Or, to put it another way, if believers get to question my judgement, I get to question theirs. It's fair game brah.

Not the point. Not only do vast swaths of believers reject your claim ("it's not about winning or losing") on its face, but the said claim probably just belies a uncertainty as to whether one could win anyway.

Getting involved in a discussion just to try to be above it all when convienient does kinda smack of the lame. ;)

Bancannon's not loaded, though. Been posting too much non-mod stuff in this thread to bring a loaded bancannon in here.

Why is the existence of God laughable when, without Him, we cease to exist?

Why is the existence of a god serious, when it's obviously just a mechanism for people to explain the things they don't understand?

See? It goes both ways.

I occasionally think "what if God were real?"
I then swiftly come to the conclusion that based on all of the available evidence I've seen and debates I've had to this date, that such a question is a silly hypothetical and shouldn't be given any further thought.

Much like occasionally I think "What would happen if I deliberately crashed my car right now?" before almost immediately coming to the conclusion that it is a very silly thing to do.
