I just want to clarify that I've thought about this issue and decided that I don't support implementing biological immortality in real life.

This is a very important first step. I wasn't sure if I'd see a practical demonstration of the reversal of aging in my lifetime. I'm still unsure if I'll see biological immortality for humans in my lifetime, but this has raised my confidence a little.

Hopefully, this gets accomplished in my lifetime, so that I don't die and disappear into oblivion.

This could be both a blessing and a cure in itself. People will have the chance of being immortal, but if we don't slow down the population growth then the world will have to many people to support itself. But this is an interesting development.

After several years of research, Harvard scientists announce that using a chemical known as NAD+ reversed the aging process in lab mice.

Dr. David Sinclair, from Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues reveal their new findings in the latest issue of Science. They focused on an intriguing compound with anti-aging properties called NAD+, short for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. It's been known that younger mice had more of it than older mice and back in 2013, the researchers found that when they boosted the NAD+ levels in older mice, they looked, biologically, like much younger animals.

In the latest paper, the scientists revealed new details on how NAD+ works to keep cells young. Sinclair put drops of NAD+ into the water of a group of mice, and within a couple of hours, their NAD+ levels started to rise. Within the first week, the scientists saw obvious age reversal in muscle and improvements in DNA repair. “We can’t tell the difference between the tissues from an old mouse that is two years old versus a young mouse that is three to four months old," Sinclair says.

Immortality appears to be mere years away if the human research pans out.

What social effects can we see come about from an effectively immortal population? Political effects? Religious? Do you think that governments could enforce population controls akin to what China has done to prevent a population explosion?

I don't think we're ready for immortality.

I love it as an idea, but people are assholes as a species.

Genies out of bottles, and all that.

I don't know - maybe a technology like this could finally be what it takes to make humans suck less. Like - if you have to live with your decision FOR EVER, maybe you'll make better decisions?

If immortality becomes affordable then I might just decide to become an atheist because, if you're immortal, you don't have to worry about what happens after death because you won't be under much risk of dying at any point. Props to you Harvard, for managing to pin the tail on the religious donkey. I really do wonder, though, what the religious consequences of this will be. This is going to be such a fun can of worms to open. I look forward to seeing CNN spar with Fox News over this.

Got a little off topic, but I hope I got across the gist of what I'm trying to say.

This technology offers no immortality at all.

It just expends life spans by up to 50%.
