Fair. So this immortality things gotta get a move on quick. And then we have to convince everyone they don't need kids.

This causeme to remember something. No matter how long you live with immortality, you will become bored with your life. Being forced to have no kids won't be good, and if a family member who can produce children are killed before they can, their bloodline will die, and I don't like that (though I think people who supported the Laws of Nature won't care about that issue)

Not everyone cares too much about that kind of stuff though. I don't want kids as far as I know, and I've never even considered my bloodline. I'd just be happy watching history as it unfolds. I mean eventually the universe will end, but that's a different issue!

I'm just worried that the history you're witnessing won't exactly be what you consider "enchanting." The earthquake in Haiti made history, but mostly due to the famine, disease, and poverty that it created. And similarly, the history you'd be witnessing as an immortal in a world full of immortals would always be seen with that lens, the famine, disease, and poverty leading to riots, rebellion, and the kind of Anarchy I DON'T like.

And it's okay if you don't want children, but most couples have them and want them. No research to back that up (which is weird, can anyone find a statistic about what % of people want kids??) but most couples that I've known have kids, had kids, or want kids. And you'd never force the world to get the procedures necessary to prevent kids.
EDIT: And you'd never force or convince the world to get the...

This is a great thing it could be used for extremely long manned space missions to help get humanity to colonize other planets.

Actually, I'd be down for immortal astronauts. That sounds cool and wouldn't kill us.

If this becomes more than a luxury for the rich I expect theocratic pogroms to break out within a decade of that event.

This is a bonus I forgot about and it would be very, very useful for that indeed!

Yes.

Bring on the immortality.

And how would you propose we deal with the population boom? With people never leaving the workforce? The strain it would place on pension programs?

I, for one, have no desire to live forever in this world. Whether an extended lifespan is preferable... well... we'll see I guess.

While this is great, it needs to be kept from the immensely rich, corrupt and pretty much almost the entire population. The human race and the planet aren't ready for immortality.

Someone needs to make a dystopian novel where everyone is competing for NAD+ tablets with an undercity of dying old people who were unable to afford the tablets.

Indeed. But immortality is hell: you will outlive all your friends, family, and what not. And if you cannot die... you will grow mad because you cannot die.

Title and OP somewhat misleading. This partially reverses and slows aging, allowing the mice to live healthier for longer. It does not make them biologically immortal, they still die.

But then that brings up an interesting point. For people against immortality being accessible, what reasoning do they have to be for longer life spans? Typically these arguments revolve around limited resources and what not but that is just as applicable to longer life spans, if not as dramatic.

Because if you live for an infinite period of time, you will use more resources in general than someone who only lives for 80 or even 500 years.
