Well, bio-engineering anaerobic bacteria to digest liquid waste better is already a thing iirc. Now, if we could build plastic-eating bacteria and release them in the ocean, especially where the gyres concentrate plastics...

Then they'd eat the plastic. Yeah, but what happens after that? What eats the bacteria, what waste products do the bacteria produce?

I think we should trial these things in more controlled environments, where we can observe closely what happens and if necessary shut down the trial. For instance a disused swimming pool, fill that up with water and plastic waste, and try out the bacteria in there.

And I'm particularly concerned about bacteria because they evolve so fast! If we engineer a nice bacterium that eats (say) polyethlene, producing only water and carbon dioxide as waste, it might get beaten out by a mutant strain which skips that final step and produces water and methane (a worse greenhouse gas than CO2 as you know). Far worse things could happen with more exotic plastics like polyester or polystyrene.

Yup, of course anything bio-engineered should be tested extensively in an enclosed, controlled environment before being released.

Those exist already. They're called humans and cyanobacteria.

One can at least try and mitigate the problems arising from human impact on the eco system. Cyanobacteria on the other hand plays a pivotal role in the nitrogen biogeochemical cycle in which their enzyme known as nitroganese as its namesake converts nitrogen to ammonia. This process is what is called nitrogen fixation in which it critical for both plant life and other organisms in the biosphere.
