The nation is twenty trillion dollars in debt, with a hundred trillion in unfunded liabilities from that welfare coming due, and we already have the highest corporate tax rate in the free world.

What room is there for this massive expansion of the welfare system?

Tax rich individuals higher, because those are taxed the lowest in what you call the free world. Actually spend the money efficiently. Pay people enough so that nobody who actually works needs benefits. Or just live with debt, as every nation in today's economy lives on massive credits and its pretty unlikely (read: impossible) that they'd ever be paid back anyway. If you'd tax earnings from the stock market with just 0.2%, you'd have more than funded it. 0.2%. On something that doesn't produce anything.

And neither does any other first world country.

The poor are every bit as human as anybody is, and they have a desire for entertainment and companionship and friendship too.

Here's the cost differences.

A Friendly Labrador - $1,800 for a Puppy.
A Dangerous Pit bull - Between FREE and $300 for a Puppy.

A Safe Gym - $500 for Membership per year.
A Dangerous Bar - $2 per beer, drunk after a 6 pack.

A Safe trip to a Ballgame with professional security guards and police presence- $ 150 for a ticket.
A Dangerous strip club with the biggest loser they can find for security- $30

A Wife - Thousands of dollars worth of Food, Utilities, Transportation, Support, Supplies and Gifts.
A Hooker - $ 50

A Safe Concert - $200
An Unsafe party in an abandoned building - Free

The Olive Garden - $50
The Outback Steakhouse - $50
Applebee's - $50

Mc Donalds - $10
An Unsafe "Sports Bar" - $20

So why don't the politicians focus more on Labor unions that have people paid more, and enforcing the laws against discrimination so that people can get jobs..

Some of the comparisons made here are patently ridiculous, but I broadly agree that poverty brings inherent dangers to those afflicted.

What exactly is your argument with regards to how politicians should support labour unions? Sorry if you've already responded to that, and feel free to just quote yourself/refer me to the relevant post.

With regard to your argument about taxes - I think you're oversimplifying here. Many taxes are levied with the explicit purpose of improving the economy and creating jobs. Now I don't agree with how this is done in most cases - often governments can put the 'needs' of the economy before the very real needs of its people. In the world as it stands today, I support more progressive tax schemes as one way of tackling poverty.

Another thing I'd suggest is a fairer allocation of resources. For example, we dispose of food that could feed the hungry and let empty homes that could house the homeless lie vacant.

I do also support unionisation, of course, but it certainly isn't the only answer to poverty, nor are the arguments I've made above.

The Swiss idea is a flexible labour market coupled with high unemployment benefits. If you get fired you receive up to 80% of your prior wage (there's a maximum on that, but I can't google it right now). How it's paid for? You and your employer are both forced to pay 7.5% of your wage for unemployment insurance (the employer can choose to pay more, IIRC my last job paid 10% while I only had to pay 5. It just has to be 15 in total and the employee can't be forced to pay more than half of it)
