The North has never even claimed to be communist, and nowadays tour guides will vehemently deny that they are communist if you ask them. Much of the North's economic activity has also been private since the near collapse of the state during the great famine of the late 1990s, with estimates from a few years ago saying between 25 - 50% of economic activity in North Korea is private.

Markets, furthermore, were never banned at any time in the DPRK's history, despite restrictions on who could work there.

The Kim Dynasty would never deliberately go to war, since they know it would lead to their demise. Nor would the US/SK go out of their way to create war in the current climate. This does leave the possibility for an accident or miscalculation, but this is not likely in of itself. Fundamentally, for war to actually become likely, the situation would have to change.

According to the founder of Juche, Hwang Jang-yeop, who actually ended up defecting to the South, the DPRK isn't even Juche.

In practice, though, Juche tends to be largely whatever the regime wants it to be. I've heard that it's intentionally made to be vague and hard to understand so that the leadership can have flexibility whenever policy chanages are necessary.

War with North Korea has been on the Horizon for the last fifty years, this is not new or even news worthy. North Korea has too many logistical and economic issues to properly wage a prolonged war within the Korean Peninsula much less secure its airspace from US air superiority. North Korean Leaders need a threat of war to maintain their grip, while never going over the edge to prevent a loss of balance. This Rep.'s remarks does nothing but allow North Korea to rile up its people.

While they have removed connections to some Marxist connections, most notably the internationalist flair of most Comintern, they are still decidely socialist. Juche pushes a decidely nationalistic view point of the world, very similar to Stalinist, they attribute this due to the control the United States has over the world. They still are socialist, as the nation denies most of the means of the production from the individual, and add in ideals very similar to cults of personalisty. They still are socialist, just not internationalists.

The only way war with North Korea won't be a complete clusterfuck is if China is America's coalition partner in regime change. At least with China on board, non-military measures could be pursued to contain the issue, and if all else fails, strategic cooperation with China would ensure subduing North Korea more quickly and cleanly, and hopefully avoid geopolitical tension in post-war restructuring.
