Dutch-Turkish tension: Kebabic Boogaloo

Postby New Dutch Colonies » Sat Mar 11, 2017 12:20 pm

Liveblog (in Dutch)
The Situation: In the Netherlands, there are 500.000 Dutch Turks, most of them with both Dutch and Turkish passports. Therefore, they are able to vote in both Dutch and Turkish elections. With the upcoming referendum in Turkey there was a Turkish minister sent to the Netherlands by airplane by Erdogan to campaign for the referendum. This morning the Dutch parliament passed a quick action wherein this Turkish minister may not land in Dutch territory, therefore cancelling the campaign. In reaction to this, Erdogan called the Netherlands ''fascist'' and ''a remainder of nazism''.

Not much later, another minister of Turkey was sent from Germany to the Netherlands to campaign by car. She however, has been stopped by the Dutch police, probably to be sent back.

My opinion is that the Dutch government acted good. There is no space for foreign political campaigning here.

"A remainder of Nazism" this coming from the guy who has effectively purged all branches of the Turkish government.

My sides have gone into orbit.

Well good on the Netherlands for proving to their Turkish population that Sèvres Syndrome is justified?

The AKP responded with hyperbole like usual, but I don't see why this move was necessary. Was there a good reason or is this just so that Mark Rutte can appease the masses?

Representatives of the Turkish government are being prevented by the Dutch government from campaigning at Turkish citizens about a Turkish referendum.

Clearly this is fair and just.

Power to trolls.

That's all this does, it fuels the propaganda engine for trolls. Public condemnation, censorship, and other means of political interference only work to enforce radical ideology from sources of misinformation. In the age of free and accessible information via the internet, campaigning is going to happen regardless of the physical presence of campaigners.

Therefore, my opinion is that the Netherlands have erred in becoming involved whatsoever with the referendum of a foreign country.

I wonder if the Dutch were so eager in preventing campaigning among American expats during the last US presidential election?

There wasn't any.

Turkish TV is calling for Turks to go to the streets. Turkish protesters are screaming in Turkish and Arabic, including the classic "Alluha Ackbar". The Turkish minister has been held up but refuses to leave, more and more police is arriving including riot police and (allegedly) some special intervention teams.

Really, interesting, I remember there being a push by both sides to try and get Expats to vote. Guess there wasn't any official push in the Netherlands... cause if so I'm sure we would have heard Trump bitching about it.

Figures...
If they want to be Turkish citizens so badly they can go back to Turkey.

Is it in their right to, in person, travel to a country, despite said country denying them the right to land there, to then incite local minorities against the government? Because that's what's happening right now.

I used to live in that street and still live quite close, it's scary.

Wanting to campaign amongst ex-pats for a referendum hardly seems a good reason to deny someone entry to a country.
to then incite local minorities against the government? Because that's what's happening right now.

And why shouldn't people protest against the government? Surely the Netherlands have not made opposition to the government a crime.

I used to live in that street and still live quite close, it's scary.

I suppose protests could be if you're not part of them.
