Man, Jason Chaffetz is such a coward. He refuses to investigate Trump after he endlessly investigated Clinton, runs away from his voters and then just says they're all paid protesters, and now is conveniently not running for reelection? What, 3 months into his term? Seems awful convenient timing. Not to mention it is escalating all the way to full on "I might leave early"

It's not too shocking he's not running for reelection, afaik he's wanted to go for a gubernatorial run for a while.

Its still all very convenient. Why even run for reelection if you're just going to conveniently ditch 3 months later anyway? That's if he actually does go through the whole not actually even finishing the damn term he just started. And even without that, he's still sleazy and a coward. It just seems like he's running away.

Also guarantee he becomes a slimy lobbyist for the years until he can run for governor.

You don't seem to like Jason Chaffetz much ...

Maybe he's afraid of Evan McMullin.

Deseret News wrote:
SALT LAKE CITY — Former independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin would beat Sen. Orrin Hatch in a head-to-head matchup for the U.S. Senate, a new poll shows.

The Centrist Project, which is recruiting candidates to run for Senate and state legislatures in 2018, commissioned the survey to gauge Utahns' opinions on several issues and the viability of an independent candidate in the upcoming Senate race.

The poll by JMC Analytics found 33 percent of residents would vote for McMullin, 29 percent for Hatch and 11 percent for an unnamed Democrat if the election were held today. Another 10 percent favored someone else, and 17 percent were undecided.

*snip*

McMullin, a former CIA operative and BYU graduate, said last month that it's possible he would challenge Hatch or Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah.

Chaffetz, who had toyed with taking on Hatch, announced Wednesday that he won't seek re-election or run for any office in 2018. He also hasn't ruled out resigning before his term ends.

The five-term congressman said he always intended to get in and serve and get out. Asked if Hatch has stayed too long, Chaffetz said, "I’ll let you come to your own conclusion."

Hatch has said he could step aside if someone like former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney were to replace him, though the senator said he doesn't think Romney is going to run.

... or he wants to replace Hatch in 2018 and pretty much lied in his public statement.

From Vox

Thank you!

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Representative in the United States House of Representatives. Serving is an honor and a privilege that I have never taken for granted.

After long consultation with my family and prayerful consideration, I have decided I will not be a candidate for any office in 2018.

Since late 2003 I have been fully engaged with politics as a campaign manager, a chief of staff, a candidate and as a Member of Congress. I have long advocated public service should be for a limited time and not a lifetime or full career. Many of you have heard me advocate, “Get in, serve, and get out.” After more than 1,500 nights away from my home, it is time. I may run again for public office, but not in 2018.

For those that would speculate otherwise, let me be clear that I have no ulterior motives. I am healthy. I am confident I would continue to be re-elected by large margins. I have the full support of Speaker Ryan to continue as Chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee. That said, I have made a personal decision to return to the private sector.

I am grateful for all of you in the current and previous 3rd Congressional District. I acknowledge the outstanding work of my dedicated staff. Together we have been a strong advocate for Utahns.

By announcing now, I hope to give prospective candidates time to lay the groundwork for a successful run. I have no doubt the 3rd Congressional District will be represented by a Republican. I trust you to find the best person to serve.

Thank you!

Jason Chaffetz

He says twice that he won't run for any office in 2018. Could be a lie.

Chaffetz?

...Huh, I thought he did. I swear I read that his margins were rather slim in the "purple district" of Utah. Guess not.

Edit: They may have been referring to him cozying up to Trump may not go over too well in a state that was pretty reluctant about Trump in the first place.

This is what I was afraid of: These idiots would try to appeal to the ones that refused to vote on it last time, and make it worse. And somehow, they did. Amazing how you can make it worse than it already was. At least the more stupid they go, the more they'll be despised I guess.

What would be funny is if another section of them don't end up wanting to vote for it. And we're sure as hell going to send in a bunch of opposition complaints.

In his fifty-two years since high school, has Donald Trump so much as skimmed a history text dealing with nations outside the United States? Or is there now a need for a dedicated White House Historian (Pacific Region) to - at least! - pull an uninformed President up on what NOT to say to prevent poor historical allusions from angering the US' allies? Because even if it was a genuine mistake, a gaffe/poorly-thought out comment like that wouldn't go down well with EITHER side of the 38th Parallel. And the blow-out from such a stupid comment like that would have been FAR worse if he had mentioned that Korea was a part of Japan.

(For historical context, the Japanese had occupied Korea since at least after the Russo-Japanese War and were only thrown out after WW2. The occupation, suffice to say, bore hallmarks similar to what would be seen in China and the South Pacific).

And this comes after the Sec. of State had come by the area in order to keep things calm and in the loop, too.

The next item on Congress' agenda should be the spending continuation, since the current one ends in a week. However, after that's done they may try to pass the new healthcare bill if they think they have the votes since their plans for tax reform hinged a bit on removing a lot of the spending from the ACA. Trump is still suggesting rather strongly he wants to get healthcare done this year, so he'd be supportive of a new bill just to say it was done.

I'd say if the new healthcare bill could be introduced in May or earlier if spending is taken care of quickly.

it is far safer to just lie about it like trump is doing now "its gotten really really good" (when the talks--there are no official bill changes--violate every promise trump made about an Obamacare replacement). its gotten them this far there is no need to commit political suicide.
