Trump doesn't have a clue in general. It's not a bad rule of thumb to assume that, whenever he opens his mouth, he's probably basing what comes out on some headline he saw on Fox News or Breitbart a couple of hours before.

Once you publicly release that batch of info, nobody else has to buy it. They can have it for free, from you, therefore the ISP cannot sell that batch of info to them. Got it?

Another thing, I'm pretty sure ISP's would prefer buyers who DON'T announce what they bought, from who and for how much. Ideally, the customer who's data was sold would never even know.

Unscrubbed coal burning causes worse pollution (like your pic) than the scrubbing that's legally required on every US coal thermal plant. Small scale thermal coal (home heating eg in China) is worst of all.

I have a bad feeling that the term "clean coal" is being appropriated ... to mean ordinary thermal coal with full carbon emissions. "Clean" only in the sense of being scrubbed of sulphides and soot. Then by a fallacy of false dualism, ordinary coal burning will be perfectly fine with no downsides ... since it isn't unscrubbed "dirty coal" burning with smog and acid rain.

Thus the status quo is presented as progress, and actual progress by those researchers and companies trying to find a way to extract energy from coal without massive carbon emissions, is marginalized.

Though honestly I doubt you can STOP THE CLEAN ENERGY REVOLUTION.

Another thing I'll say about coal, is that releasing more federal land for coal leases will do nothing for coal miners in WV or the Appalachians in general. In fact it's very bad for them. Most Federal land is out west, where cheaper open-cut mining already saturates what market there still is for coal (domestically or exported).

It's hard to think of a better way to kill off the old underground mines, really.

Given a wide range of choices I think customers would reward an ISP which promised not to (and didn't) sell their data on. But a lot of people in the US, particularly out of big cities, don't have a wide range of choice between ISP's, or any choice at all.

I think because telecoms used to be a 'natural monopoly' when they dealt with analogue telephone — a network which wasn't practical for multiple telecoms to share. Away from high-tech hubs the copper wires are still owned by single companies (baby Bells) and no-one is going to lay a competing network, fibre or copper or whatever unless they can be a monopoly in that area.

It's still possible to have competing ISP's but with a monopoly operator of the infrastructure, the two types of business just have to be legally separate. The monopoly cannot be allowed to favor one ISP over another, let alone be the same company which outright excludes competitors from its network.

Finally let me say that wireless internet isn't much better, it also has network infrastructure (towers) and what seems like healthy competition in some city markets now could still devolve to regional monopolies.
