Not even the scarification done by pre-modern cultures? Some indigenous people in the Philippines used to (or still do) scar their bodies (some moved on to tattooing) as a sign of strength/killing an enemy.

Precisely my point, I believe. It makes sense to them and they're only hurting themselves - so why stop them? (Unless of course if it's life threatening, which I hope it isn't)
