And technically where I was born was originally Spanish colonial possessions, but what have you; the cultural impact these days is relatively minor. Where I live now I'm still surprised, what with the Irish, Italian, and other Catholic influences in Boston, that we don't have anything big this week.

Ah. Ireland and England and I would assume other present and former commonwealth countries have Pancake Tuesday as opposed to Mardi Gras. You binge on pancakes at home in your pants. It's the introvert's Mardi Gras.
