I was reading the religious communitarian thread, and there was a brief section that mentioned that an average, middle class American would be able to buy a small army in, say, Somalia.

I will most likely inherit $500,000 - $1,000,000 USD from my father when he croaks. Assuming I save approximately half of the money, how much territory could I turn into a Holy Empire? I don't plan on actually becoming a warlord, although I admit the experience would be quite pleasurable, however, I was just wondering...

The Republic, by Plato | Leviathan, by Thomas Hobbes | The Confucian civil service system of imperial China | The "Golden Liberty" elective
monarchy system of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth | The corporatist/technocratic philosophy of Henri de Saint-Simon | The communitarian
ideological framework of the Singaporean People's Action Party | "New Deal"-style societal regimentation | Kantian/Mohist/Stoic philosophy

Call her, talk through whatever it is that she is texting you about, and tell her you want to transfer. Wanting to transfer isn't a terrible thing.

Not much, I gather. Land alone does not an Empire make; you'd also need provisions for your small army, and that's not the only thing to consider.

So I'm just going to tell her in person tomorrow.

Good, good. Much better to say in person, you'd be far more likely to be fobbed off if she can't see on your face that you're serious.

Good luck tomorrow then, don't fret. She's your mother, she'll only want what's best for you.

Yes, yes he does.

They're paying for some of it, and it is presumed that he still lives under their authority; they have a right to tell him what to do or not unless he wants to live on his own.

Sure he doesn't need their permission, but his parents are not obligated to keep paying for what he needs for his college education that his grants and loans are not paying already if this is the case.

I know Kannap's working so I don't know who's paying for what, but if it's going to cost the mother anything of course permission is needed, independence comes from paying your own way.

Indeed. It's already been established that Kannap is paying for at least part. It's further been established the move means that it will cost less to go to the college he wants to go to than the college he is currently at. And, I never said he would get them to pay for it regardless of his decision. I specifically stated if he needed to work another job and take out more loans, then he should do it and get himself to UNCA. (Quote below)

I'd say independence comes from not only paying your own way, but also showing you can take care of yourself and have the maturity to make it out on your own.

The less responsible you are, the less independence one should trust you with, in my opinion, if you're living under your parents' roof.

But, I mean, I shouldn't be obligated to pay for my adult kids' fuckups either if they want to do whatever they want to, they can go and get their own flat if they feel I am too much of an asshole.
