I used to be fluent in Sumerian, Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Greek, Latin, Old Japanese, Old Chinese, several East African languages from thousands of years ago ... the usual, when you're 17,265 years old.

I've been learning Latin and Ancient Greek.

I've always wanted to learn Latin, where are you learning from, and Classical or Vulgar Latin?

High school, initially, and now at university. I used Ecce Romani and the Shelmerdine textbooks (the latter for both languages, though different Shelmerdines wrote them), though now I'm at the point of mostly reading actual authors in both. One does not learn Vulgar Latin in a classroom, as it's a very broad concept with no single set of rules across all the different variants of time, space, and social class, but it is a passing interest of mine.

Did I ever recommend Elcock's The Romance Languages to you? It's a wonderful book on the development of the Romance standards out of Vulgar Latin and the effect of other languages around the borders of the Empire.

I know. Tom Lehrer was asked a number of years ago for some comments on current events - this was in the 90s, I believe - and he declined, saying it was like asking an inhabitant of Pompeii for humorous comments on lava.
