So I finished A Blinking Light Up On The Clouded Mountain, a long and quite good fanfic putting Welcome to Night Vale into the world of His Dark Materials, from the perspective of Carlos the Experimental Theologian. It worked fairly well, though I think having a scientist as the POV character unravelled some of the mystery behind Night Vale. HDM is a universe fundamentally amenable to human reason and humanism, while Night Vale is fundamentally not.

Anyway now I'm out of fanfic to read. There's always more fanfic, of course, but it's hard to find curated fanfic, ie the good stuff. When you're talking about an art form with a very low barrier to entry, there's going to be a lot of haystack and not many needles.

Does anyone have any good recommendations?

Tsar, I wish I could assist you. I don't read fanfic. However, I am reading all of Bret Easton Ellis' novels right now. Lots of sex, drugs, and 80s in those books :P

I only spent a few years in the 1980s. I didn't much care for it, and most of it I've forgotten. 80s nostalgia is lost on me.

Hey now, fanfic should be respected as good fiction. There's a science to how fanfic approaches the fiction it derives itself from.

This article can help you out.

If tl;dr, let me grab a quote:

"The fundamental objective of fanfic, especially when it is written by women, queer and genderqueer people, and people of color, is to insert yourself, aggressively and brazenly, into stories that are not about and were never intended to be about or represent you."

Whoot!

Of course, though, I did not really do that for the stuff I actually put online. Which I consider the decent stuff.

There was, however, the NaNoWriMo attempt that probably fits the bill and sadly, it's when I was an Objectivist-leaning-ish-actually-hating-Ayn-Rand's-literary-style-from-what-I'd-heard-libertarian-pushing-his-own-politics-into-

I preffer the one's written by lonely perverts. The ones that write their favorite character into sexual situations. Situations that reveal aspects of the fanfic writter's flawed psyche.

Repressed sexual desires does not a flawed psyche make.

To be fair, all of fanfiction could be argued as revealing some sentiment of one's psyche... as does all fiction in general, except with the additional point of how it relates to the original text.
