So they threw life rings in for him but he didn't grab them because he was possibly trying to drown himself. The people laughing at him is terrible, but there's a lot of faux outrage going on here. People did try to help him.

Here is a link with a video from a local source. It seem the guy really did actually want to commit suicide.

The making fun of him seems to come from people saying more along the lines hey you don't swim here.

The weird thing about drowning is it does not look like drowning. http://mariovittone.com/2010/05/154/

Just because you’ve swam in colder doesn’t negate the fact that 10°C water can kill you. Cold shock is a legitimate danger at those kinds of temperatures and incapacitation (which will lead to drowning) and hypothermia are serious threats even if you manage to survive the initial shock.

It always felt like the water in swimming pools here in Canada was at 10°C, but I looked up the official regulations and it turns out they're supposed to be at 25°C. My mistake.

Wasn't it in Italy where the crowds shouted racial abuse at a visiting soccer star who was black?

On the internet anyone can claim to be the next step in human evolution.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.

Well the water was below 50°F, he probably went into shock and/or lost motor function control. That's why he couldn't grab on to anything though it's highly possible that he wanted to commit suicide and that's how he ended up in the water.

Apparently it was tourists who did the mocking and laughing. I'd really wish the OP did a title change

Water tends to be deceptive when it comes to temperature, so no worries.

When my partner was in italy he took photos of graffiti that read, "Fuck tourists. Fuck capitalism."

This type of behavior really makes understandable why locals would believe this way. Not sure what could be done tho.

The first reflex of cold shock is to gasp. If his head was below water when this happened then he would likely get a mouth full of water, causing him to become less conscious and less responsive.

As I look at the weather in Venice jumping into the canal to try and save him likely would have just gotten you killed as well.

Yes some people said some mean things but there are always assholes in this situations either because they assume he wont really drown(or jump when its a jumper).

I watched the video he was not. The weather was near freezing if you jumped in to save him you would likely be dead with him.

The water was 9°C, it was fucking cold. If he got any water in his body, highly likely, it would speed up his eventual death.

According to the link (I honestly don't think you read it):

Except in rare circumstances, drowning people are physiologically unable to call out for help. The respiratory system was designed for breathing. Speech is the secondary or overlaid function. Breathing must be fulfilled, before speech occurs.
