Was the USA 2016 election the worst in it's history?

Postby The Derpy Democratic Republic Of Herp » Tue Jan 24, 2017 10:42 pm

https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/current-events/election-2016/

So if the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has this listed as a reason as people calling into its hotline, this election could not have been good.

The US elected someone who most people didn't want to be president, were faced with two less than stellar candidates from both parties, and had a hatred for both candidates.

Lets face it, no matter who would have won there was no way that the American people would have been happy either way.

My opinion: Yes. This election was just the worst. Too many people unhappy about everything that happened in it to be a good election.

What say you NSG?

Nope. Much worse presidents have been voted in. Such as Andrew Jackson.

There was also another election when more of the population of the US didn't like the results. Abraham Lincoln. We all know where that went. Although I don't personally think their reasoning was right.

Depends what you mean by worst. 1860 was more divisive.

Oh Skuld's hammer no. Hayes's election for one.

This wasn't a particularly good one, but it's hardly the worst. Just as Trump is REALLY gonna have to work at it to be considered the worst president.

1968 was bad too. 1964 not good either. After a president having been shot to death and the whole Goldwater thing. 1976 also bad. Watergate and Vietnam aftermath. And the other issues.

But as far as divisive and violent 1860 the worst. Sure this one was not good, and one of the more bad ones. But certainly not the worst.

We have survived much, much worse.

Well in terms of reacting 1860 is easily the worse. Civil War and all that.

1968 there were mass riots across the country. Admittedly not just over the elections but the issues surrounding it. 1860 we had a literal civil war.

1968 was certainly dysfunctional, and, at least in my opinion, had very bad effects. However, I don't think it's really in competition for the top spot. 1964 was pretty noncompetitive, and the result led to very good effects. 1976 was not particularly eventful, nor did it have any major effects, good or bad.

Out of those three 1968 is the only one I really agree with.

No, Americans are just becoming less stable psychologically. It comes with lack of social maturity and proper psychological development.

Mental illness is the only reason somebody would kill themselves over the results of an election in a developed country.

Appreciate what you have.

Much as people obsess over how much of a lunatic they think Trump is, there have been more insane and openly tyrannical candidates in history who won elections, inherited executive positions, or seized power in coups, especially in parts of Caribbean and Africa.

In my own country there are some openly corrupt, sexist, and racist people who have stood for and won public office. And the day after the elections there were always people who had nothing to look forward to under a few more years of that bullshit. But they got a grip, talked animatedly about it at the coffee shop with their friends, went to work, and waited patiently to vote in the next election. Sure, we have demonstrations too - I participated in some of them, but nobody collectively lost their shit, killed themselves over the election results, etc. Our suicide hotlines were not overwhelmed by depressed people in the wake of the elections. Another thing was the utter lack of media sensationalization and openly partisan cleavage in reporting which characterizes US news outlets, so I guess that helped too.

Anyway, forgive me if I think less of Americans who have extreme and over-the-top reactions to Trump's win. Don't throw tantrums. It's okay to demonstrate. It's okay to be sad. But be adults about it. And please don't end it all. It won't change anything. What you can do is work towards change by getting involved politically and resolving to win over some votes for your party or candidate in the next election.

I got trashed for saying this before back in November, but I'll continue to say it as long as the topic keeps getting broached on NSG.
