I didn't read the OP and am going to only react to the idea of a total full out immediate ban on cars.

Another thing that strikes me as odd about the report is how New York City, NY - a city with a full-fledged subway system, with buildings packed in tightly, and with traffic conditions horrid enough for mass transit to be more efficient - not only beat Los Angeles, almost the polar opposite, in pedestrian deaths, but beat it by nearly twice as much.

I couldn't agree less! Banning cars is like banning penicillin, you do that and your kicking humanity in the throat and taking away the most important discovery ever.

But penicillin can cause adverse reactions, and people are allergic to it!

So we should ban that too! And airplanes, because they can crash!

No. I live in a rural area and I don't appreciate the risk car users put me under. Rail + Bicycles is the answer. It is not fair to get rid of cars in the city and not do the same in the country. Rural people deserve the same benefits of being without cars that city people deserve.

How do you take home a load of groceries in a rural area with "rails + bicycles?"

Maybe we can go back to using horse-drawn carriages or something. Or maybe one of those Radio Flyer wagons attached to the back of the bike...

While that would be an alternative, how much money and time has been spent into refining automobiles to where they are now? That's throwing out 130 or so years of invention because smog makes people cough.

It depends on how rural your rural is, I guess. If you can reach a general store and back in an hour round trip then it might be alright. I think it's more for those people with several children and who live a decent distance away, who commonly go on weekly/monthly shopping trips to stock up, without the convenience of being able to go everyday. Even if you stick each kid on a bike with a pack, you're probably not going to be able to carry enough.

Did it ever occur to you that your needs and how they are met aren't universal? What if you're a stay-at-home mother with a pile of kids, and you live 6 or 8 miles from the grocery store? Do you honestly expect anyone to believe that their nutritional requirements could possibly fit in a backpack?

Okay, so the mother with four kids has to cart groceries for the whole family from a supermarket in the city to her rural house?

Haha, it's easier for those of us who don't live within walking distance of a supermarket to imagine the problems here.

But on another note, how about all the car companies? The oil/gas companies that would have to lay off tens of thousands of employees? This is why I thought this might've been a joke -- it's so wildly idiotic that it actually seems like one.

1) She's getting it by car. She loads it into two carts with the help of her kids, wheels it out to the car, dumps them in the back seat and trunk, and drives off.

2) Yes, she has a job. She shops on the weekends or after she picks her kids up from school / pre-school.

3) Her kids. However, I'd love to see you fit four kids on a bike, or expect them to ride four miles in the rain carrying heavy groceries.
