If your concern is that you don't have time to do the things you want, then move somewhere where you don't have to spend so much time commuting between different locations. Like within walking or biking distance of work, or school, or your children's school as the case may be.

Yep, we can all afford to up and move and we can easily find different jobs our families can all do the same so we can all be closer to each other.

Or we could get everything we need to move closer to us, including all the sporting grounds, everyone we need to se everything else that we want in order to live.
You know you've made it on NSG when you have a whole thread created around what you said.

People should stop pretending that riding a bicycle is so difficult and stop pretending that this is somehow bad for the poor or elderly. The poor ALREADY go without a car.

Many of the elderly have lost their licenses because they are physically unable to drive.

Getting rid of car culture while increasing public transportation options would be a net benefit to both the poor and to the elderly.

By doing things that dismantle the car culture, it would be less necessary to travel such a distance in the first place! When it comes to the exhaust, I guess a person could develop the hybrid and fuel cell technology further, but it would have to make some sort of audible noise equivalent to diesel or traditional car engines for pedestrian (especially VI pedestrian) safety.

Stick playing cards in the wheel spokes for that nice flippety sound. Hell, they put junk in natural gas to make it smell so people would know if there's a leak -- I'm sure they can come up with something.

You don't think osteoporosis and other problems caused by being over 60 has anything to do with it? Seriously?

Osteoporosis and other problems of old age are not actually caused by being over 60. They are caused by degeneration of bone, cartilege, stiffening of muscle tissue, etc. While it is true that such conditions tend to worsen naturally over time (as with all degenerative conditions), they are made far worse far faster by lack of physical activity. The human body is definitely a use it or lose it proposition, and if you keep moving, you will lose less mobility.

Sadly, you can't really move much in a car.

Exactly. And don't think your brain is not dependent on the healthy functioning of your body too. Machines to make things more easy are great and I welcome them. But we must be intelligent and not use them to our physical and mental detriment.

Even if it takes 5 whole minutes to accelerate to the speed limit, I don't see how the bus could be taking 10 extra minutes unless the car is speeding. If there is some issue with physics here that I am missing, please enlighten me?

Acceleration and deceleration are slower on the part of the larger more massive object... Add multiple stops in between for the massive object and it'll extend travel time significantly...

No, we're (I believed) discussing a bus that doesn't take stops, compared to a car that doesn't take stops. And I don't actually believe that it takes 5 minutes for a bus to accelerate to the speed limit...I was being ridiculously generous.

Does not compute.

I was wrong the offical timetable is one hour (see whyalla to Pt Augusta Arr) though I swear that it has only taken us about 50 minutes maybe they have the extra 10 in case of heavy traffic.

I know for a fact as I have driven and been driven this same distance on this same road where it only takes 40-45 minutes, definitely no speeding as I have been driven by my mother who never goes over the limit.

I have no idea why this is I just know that it happens.

It's a problem for the sighted community, too, since we don't have eyes in the back of our heads, and just because a car is green, that doesn't mean the driver won't be moving at speed while reading a magazine or shaving or putting on make-up or playing video games. In all seriousness, I approve of the idea.

I'm not saying it won't but what I am saying is that simply getting a bike and not a car to ride everywhere isn't the be all and end all.
