[Africa] Yahya Jammeh trying everything to stay as President

Postby Minoa » Wed Jan 18, 2017 8:20 am

Sources: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-38662000 and http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-gambia ... KKBN1520NM

Outgoing Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh, is so desperate to stay in power, that he has gone as far as to declare a state of emergency and impose a 90-day term extension, after creating a Supreme Court case to try and overturn the election result. This is a sharp contrast to his initial decision to simply respect the election result in which Adama Barrow won.

Attempts by ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) to get Jammeh to step down, with what little of his reputation being intact, have failed. Now, ECOWAS, after getting the OK from the African Union, have threatened to deploy a Senegal-led force to remove Jammeh, if he does not step down soon. Thousands of Gambians have already fled the country, and countries like the UK and the Netherlands have recalled all their tourists.

Given his human rights record before the election, Yahya Jammeh simply has to go. Jammeh is risking running his reputation and his country to the ground if he continues to come up with desperate measures to stay in power, despite Adama Barrow (currently in Senegal but vowing to return to the Gambia tomorrow to start his presidency) about to be recognised as the sole legitimate President of the Gambia by virtually everyone but the closest of Jammeh’s allies.

Jammeh, who seized power in a coup back in ’94, did also have a bit of a cult of personality, putting his portrait on all dalasi banknotes issued since 15 April 2015: before then they had representative portraits of Gambian people.

What are your thoughts about Mr. Yahya Jammeh and his desperate attempts to stay in power?

I'm honestly more sad at this entire situation more than anything, we have here a situation in which an autocratic president lost an election due to the sheer will and muster of 7 political parties in what was a successful attempt to out him and end his 22 year rule - And now it's all being threatened by Jammeh's desire to remain in power.

Hopefully this can be ended without bloodshed, but given the AU's response and Jammeh's stubbornness, it might just become a more violent situation, which would be most unfortunate.

Hopefully this doesn't end with a civil war.

Indeed.

I hope that Jammeh is at least peacefully overthrown without much in the way of bloodshed.

Let's hope the Gambian military stands aside as the AU military expedition drags him before the ICC.

doesn't it have to go through the UN first?

Actually there is something hilarious about this. The dictator is claiming the election was rigged against him.

Apparently the military of Senegal, on behalf of ECOWAS, is planning to invade Gambia by midnight if Jammeh doesn't give up power by then.

Here's hoping Jammeh can come to his senses.

Yes, he literally rigged past elections in his favor, and now says these were rigged against him.

In theory. In practice the UN is too much a divided, incompetent gridlocked mess, you can just ingnore it if you wish.

It will be interesting to see if Senegal follows through.
Gambia is completely surrounded by the much larger Senegal, it is completely defenseless.

Senegal also intervened to stop a coup in 1981. So it is not without precedent.

Something like this should not be ignored. Jammeh lost a free and fair election and now doesn't want to leave power. I hope it does not lead to civil war like what happened in Ivory Coast a few years ago.

Shameful!!
He is giving us a bad name.
When the time to step down comes you must step down. The only thing he could possible get away with is changing how many times one can run for president. ......But that wouldn't really help considering he lost this one.

Good question. But would they care enough to approve it either? If Senegal asked permission would the UN even meet to vote on it?

It's not like the UN has anything more pressing to do.

True. But not that it does much of anything either. They can always bicker and bitch about Israel.

Its only happened once in the last ten years that I'm aware of. Even In Nigeria the incumbent President accepted defeat.
