[Europe] Waszczykowski’s slip creates a new country

Postby Minoa » Wed Jan 11, 2017 11:44 am

In a snippet clearly worthy of inclusion for NationStates, since it is all about running your own nation, Poland's foreign minister Witold Waszczykowski led the press to think that there is a country called San Escobar, which is actually a slip-up on Saint Kitts and Nevis’ Spanish name, San Cristobal y Nieves. Regardless, the Internet responded in customary style, with an official Twitter account, a flag, and even some currency.

And yes, San Escobar is on NationStates now.

But to be honest Waszczykowski, we already had the facilities to create countries long before you — more than 14 years ago to be precise. :p It just makes me wonder how long before a politician thinks Minoa exists for real (probably because the name is short and simple).

General thoughts, NSG? What political problems inspired you to create your nation here? In my case, it was the Greek debt crisis.

Interesting to hear.

But before NationStates, people made their own micronations and did them IRL. *cough* Molossia and Sealand *cough*

As for me, no political problems inspired me to make my nation.

It could be said that NationStates brought the idea of creating your own country to a greater audience on the Internet. Cyber Nations came into existence four years later, in 2006. :p

Polish minister talks "relations" with non-existant country.

Postby Petrolheadia » Wed Jan 11, 2017 1:12 pm

On 10th January 2017, the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Witold Waszczykowski, told the press that he had been strengthening diplomathic relations with countries "like Belize or San Escobar".

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/ ... an-escobar

This caused amusement, as San Escobar isn't an actual country. The official later clarified that he meant St. Kitts and Nevis, but the Polish internet is still having a field day mocking the blunder. There are even fake "official" Facebook and Twitter pages for San Escobar:

So, NS,,what do you think of that blunder? Is it worth mockery?

The minister has probably watched too much "Narcos".
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.

Over the hills and far away.

Well, is there another explanation for a person getting the title of his recent talk partner wrong?

He could have been looking at a map in spanish since it would then be called "San Cristóbal y Nieves" which kind of sounds like what he was trying to say.

No; but I understand that the current president is from the city of Al Pacino, capital of the Niro District in Tabasco Province.

Al Pacino is in the foothills of the Sierra Corleone.

The highest mountain in the Sierra Corleone - indeed in all of San Escobar - is Hasta La Vista.

It's a wonderful country.
