Oscars

Postby Takaram » Sun Mar 07, 2010 10:12 pm

So, how many of you watched the Oscars? What did you think of the results?

I think that District 9 was kind of gypped, personally.

PS: Normally, I really wouldn't care, but hey

Whoops, didn't see the other one over in Fiction. Though technically the two threads are about different things, so I'll let the mods decide.

I was surprised "Avatar" didn't get Best Picture or Best Director. Glad for Sandra Bullock and Jeff Bridges.

The show seemed oddly muted. Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were merely okay.

I had heard it talked about... some. But I think that several other movies in the category sounded better (District 9 among them).

It was a big deal during late summer, but ultimately a small film that went largely on word of mouth. Which makes tonight kind of a cool David vs. Goliath thing. Especially when you take into account Bigelow is Cameron's ex-wife.

I watched Hurt Locker on the recommendation of my older brother. It was great, though a little to dramatic for my tastes. I preferred Up In The Air.

"District 9" got completely ignored once "Avatar" was in the picture. That's because although both films were fantastic, they were too similar, and "Avatar" used beauty where "District 9" used ugliness.

IMO, "Hurt Locker" was a nice film. If the US pulls out of Iraq reasonably soon and nothing unusual happens, it may occupy a similar role for students of the Iraq war as "Apocalypse Now" does now for the Vietnam War.

... still think the Academy is busy snubbing science fiction.

I saw them. I haven't seen most of the movies in them (including Avatar, heh).

I was kinda rooting against Avatar a lot because I don't like when the big movies win a lot, it's annoying.

I'm glad that a woman finally won best director though. And Sandra Bullock finally won too. I thought that was great for her. :)

The Hurt Locker was a relatively creative movie. More creative than Avatar's storyline and way of narrating things.

The word "fantastic" do not necessarily means "creative", specially as many people tend to give more value to how creative is your way to tell the story, than the story itself. In this case, two stories and messages were creative, but I think Avatar was pretty conservative about the way of presenting it, after all Cameron is a fan of the Field Paradigm, meanwhile The Hurt Locker found an even more creative way of telling its story.

But...Sandra Bullock? C'mon.

I was hoping for more Oscars for Up in the Air, but it didn't happened.

I don't think it's hard to have a more creative storyline than Avatar considering it was a rip off of Pochahontas.

So, why did THE HURT LOCKER do so well at the Oscars?

I rented it a coulple of months ago. I thought it was a great movie, it was exciting and emotionally draining at the same time. Sort of like how SWEENEY TODD was glorious and totally fucking ominous at the same time.

But, seriously, with THE HURT LOCKER and THE BLIND SIDE, is Hollywood becoming more tollerant of the military and films that don't have "R" ratings?

I'm honestly surprised Avater didn't get more awards, I was sure it would win best picture. I'm not saying that it deserved more awards, personally I'd give Avatar 2/5 stars, it's just that people seem to love anything that has good effects, explosions, 3d, and sex scenes in it.

I agree that District 9 got screwed, Blomkamp should have gotten best director IMO. I laughed when I saw that both Avatar and D9 were nominated for best visual effects, Avatar had a 300 million dollar budget and a 10 year production time, D9 had 30 million, that's so lopsided it's comical.

It's really good, if you're not the military. Pretty much everyone who dies, dies because he acted in a way totally contrary to military procedure.

Watch it if you want to see how civilians given uniforms would handle a war.

NPR pointed out that the Academy is made up of many more actors than directors, so they're unlikely to go for a movie like Avatar that minimizes the importance of acting.

It did win where it should have though, in effects and all this.

I think that best picture should have a better story though. I was actually hoping for Inglorious Basterds for the upset (this movie also got neglected).
