I'd always imagine bleach implying that it turns the hair white.... which I guess that's what you meant, but that you want to dye it, hence you need to whiten it.

When you have dark hair and you want to dye it you have to bleach it unless it's a darker color (impossible for someone like me with black hair), but for most kinds of bleach (unless like hardcore you wanna go full out white) your hair will get to blonde and stop, or orange if you don't strip the hair dye you already have in your hair.
