Raccoons are terrifying.

Well.... they're terrifying because they have no conception of time beyond the current and knowing that someone's dumping food just above them, but never actually being able to reach the person doing so to kill them for hiding so much of the goodies from them.

Raccoons are legit terrifying. I had an amazing camping experience with them when I was younger. They don't care if you're there -- they will waltz up, take your loaf of bread from the table and run off.

We just got our first public housing building where I live, like ten apartments beside an old middle school.

Well, it's just public housing here/HDB because 90% of us live in it and it's nicer than the average "projects" in the US.

Sungai Pusat wrote:It's 800 sq feet... that doesn't help.

Again, that's what you get by being an international city tbf; NYC, London, Paris, Hong Kong, Tokyo; all of those places are marked right now by a similar process of gentrification. At this rate, all the local shops will start closing down here in Singapore and up will be hipster-y junctions that probably can't fucking afford the prices themselves.

At least we're not Hong Kong; fucking PRADA has to close a store there, apparently, because the rents are so atypically high.

Jesus... I've never been anywhere with more than a million people so like this is alot of culture shock for me.

Ah, I think that explains it... sort of.

I mean, it's not really meant to be any sort of ill will towards those people and places (The comment about the gentrification happening here); it's more that I'm sort of invested in the local stuff and apparently a LOT of that doesn't make any money because it's both too expensive and the expectation is that it's to be eaten because it's cheap, not "It's to be eaten because I like eating it"

Hell, I carry that expectation myself and I was raised on really Western stuff in general before, albeit with plenty of local flourishes, so fucking glasshouses.

Also, fucking stupid fucking shti fuck internet connection cut off as I was posting this, so I lost it; THANKFULLY I realised what was coming and copied the message over, like I didn't the first time around.

Monkeys too.

Raccoons don't have a monopoly on being terrifying with human-fed food, though I suppose they have a local monopoly regardless. :P

Aye, I think they're 11€ now back in Ireland for a pack of 20. I'd scoff at the price now if I didn't use to smoke, but they raise the price so slowly I don't think it's a good deterrent when you're hooked. 20 cent increments per year isn't that high a shift. Throw a frog in a pot of boiling water etc etc.

To be fair, the frog doesn't stay put.

Though to be fair, maybe the rate of boiling is too slow, who knows?

Ehh. It means more of the poor, crime-ridden, and run-down side of town. I live in the middle of the projects in my city -- two meth-lab busts (one across the street at the neighbours), gangs, et cetera. I've seen everything from police, to US Marshals, to DHS, and the FBI here. Lovely neighbourhood, you should visit. :lol2:

People here often live together though. Our neighbour's house has four families living in it, as an example. They all split the rent and voila.

That's how raccoons roll. Once you're in their neighbourhood, your food is theirs.

I think that still varies quite heavily amongst generally considered developed countries: The Netherlands and New Zealand are still about 10k apart in the regard of GDP PPP per capita.

Oh, I embraced Pokémon Go with a great fervour, and I'm getting Pokémon Moon soon. I was young once, shockingly! o/

I have played Red, Crystal, Yellow, Emerald and X. Found out about the pokemon Gallade long after the fact.

Well, I can definitely look up what the average cost of a beer is online, so hah! :P

On that note, a beer costs less in Singapore, yet out GDP per capita is more I believe.

But yeah, I do get what you mean by the cost of living and the like; a lot of things seem to become more expensive when the economy does well. Sometimes a paradoxical thing, like how the more housing become affordable in a desirable place, the more expensive it can eventually become.
