I mean $122,000 for a five door hatchback is insane. $122,00 could get you a mid-range Mercedes S-Class. Or a house if you went to some town in the middle of nowhere.

That's over twice how much my family payed for our three bedroom, two story house. O.o

Ah, the car price itself. :P

Well, we bit the bullet for that, really. And also bought a small-ish car.

We have a bigger car now. It was a swap of titles, really, with I think a friend or a relative, I forgot who, mostly because we figured we didn't need the car for so long... and then we recently bought half of the current COE value to keep it for another five years.

Also, what town in the middle of nowhere, where would you find that in Singapore? Or a $100k house for that matter? :P

Alternate history where France became a martial law state because of a right-left civil war. ALSO, ISIS never succeeded because of harsh laws, immigration policy and curfews. Also no problems with Russia because it didn't adopt Hollande policies.

True but still, I don't know how people can afford that, everything's cheaper where I live, we wouldn't survive if it wasn't.

This is why I'll be getting my new motorcycle sometime next year. Brand new (Indian Scout) it's going to be around $10,000 versus a new car of like $30,000 or more.

Comes with the territory when you live just a county or two over from tobacco farms, my state produces along with Georgia and Kentucky 80% of the US's local tobacco.

I didn't say anything about how people afford the rent here, honestly.

Only said why and about what it would do to the people within the city......

Sorry, got a little sad from that; we mostly afford it from the fact that most people opt to buy their 50 to 100 square metre space in the sky as opposed to rent it.

Example: The house I live in is, I think, valued at maybe about... okay, maybe take another place instead.

Ang Mo Kio is a famous example for how expensive things are, so we'll use that:

For a 2 room flat, it's either 340k up front or 1.9k for monthly rent.

Past 15 years, the rent cost exceeds the cost of buying it.

So... best option is to buy it instead of paying the rent for it.

Cigars are good. Unless you pull a me, and not knowing, inhale the bloody thing while your friend laughs his ass off.

That's such a large amount of money for a two room flat... You could buy a whole neighborhood here with that.

Sorry it's just hard to imagine houses costing that much, I mean i've been in apartments before and like where my dad lives, that costs him like a $900 and it's a two bedroom apartment in the city limits of Charlotte.

Yeah, cigar's are not supposed to be inhaled, cuz they're supposed to be *insert name of thing you do with mouth*, and it tastes good as well.

Here, housing to buy can be $250K up. To rent is usually $800 in the projects, and around $1-1.5K in the nicer parts of town.

It's 800 sq feet... that doesn't help.

Again, that's what you get by being an international city tbf; NYC, London, Paris, Hong Kong, Tokyo; all of those places are marked right now by a similar process of gentrification. At this rate, all the local shops will start closing down here in Singapore and up will be hipster-y junctions that probably can't fucking afford the prices themselves.

At least we're not Hong Kong; fucking PRADA has to close a store there, apparently, because the rents are so atypically high.

We just got our first public housing building where I live, like ten apartments beside an old middle school.
