Why was Estrada popular again?

He was a very popular vice president and ran a successful presidential campaign.

Pasong Tirad wrote:Marco Garrido, writing for the American Journal of Sociology in 2017, pointed out that a lot of lower-income people were very much drawn to Estrada's 1998 presidential campaign "because they perceive him to be sincere, or someone who cares about them beyond electoral considerations." This "politics of sincerity," as he called it, helped sweep populists like Estrada and Duterte into power on empty promises of being a "man of the people" who truly cares about them. This politics of sincerity helps attract large segments of the population whose considerations for voting involve learning about the character of the person they aspire to enter Malacanang.

This of course doesn't paint the whole picture, as there are many other reasons why people choose who to vote for, including what economist Ciel Habito calls the "PITIK" test - presyo, trabaho, kita (prices, jobs, wages). How will the candidate keep prices low, give people jobs and raise wages. This necessarily translates to how the economy will be dealt with.

More proof that we live in one of the worse timelines
Rappler wrote:Police arrest ex-VP candidate Walden Bello for cyber libel

MANILA, Philippines – Former vice presidential candidate and Laban ng Masa chairperson Walden Bello was arrested for two counts of cyber libel by the police on Monday, August 8.

Bello’s arrest was confirmed by his executive secretary and Laban ng Masa spokesperson Leomar Doctolero. The former VP candidate was brought to the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Station 8 in Project 4, Quezon City.

“Walden has just been arrested for cyber libel by officers of the QCPD. He is currently being taken to QC Police Station 8, P. Tuazon,” Doctolero said.

It was Davao City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 10 Judge Retrina Espe Fuentes who issued the arrest warrant on Monday. Bello’s counsels said they will move for the suspension of proceedings at RTC 10 after Bello posts bail.

Bello faces two counts of cyber libel for which bail has been set at P48,000 each.

Police Lieutenant Colonel confirmed Bello’s arrest to Rappler. He added Bello would be transferred to Camp Karingal in Quezon City, QCPD’s headquarters.

Doctolero said they had been anticipating the arrest because Bello had already been indicted for the cases last month. “We have been anticipating the arrest warrant because of the indictment of the Davao Prosecutor. It’s a bailable offense and counsel is on the way to assist him.”

Bello’s camp filed a motion for reconsideration before the Davao prosecutor’s office but it was denied, Doctolero explained.

“The resolution for his indictment was released last June 9. We filed for a Motion for Reconsideration with the Prosecutors’ Office which was subsequently denied.”

Update — As expected, released on bail. Just shows how dangerous speaking out has become.

Philippine Daily Inquirer wrote:MMDA to start expanding number coding

MANILA, Philippines — Starting on Monday, August 15, the expanded number coding scheme will be in effect in preparation for the full face-to-face classes in November, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Thursday.

Numbering will now run from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m, Dimayuga told reporters after Metro Manila Council’s first meeting, where one mayor approved the measure.

Thus, vehicles with plate numbers ending in 1 and 2 will be prohibited from using public roads on Mondays; 3 and 4 on Tuesdays; 5 and 6 on Wednesdays; 7 and 8 on Thursdays; and 9 and 0 on Fridays.

MMDA will not yet apprehend number coding scheme violators from August 15-17, according to Dimayuga.

“We will not conduct arrests yet. We will just remind them,” Dimayuga said in Filipino. “But on the 18th, [the arrests] will begin. We will start to hand out tickets.”

I love the reactions online: Filipinos, probably middle-class because they can afford a car, bewailing about how this is an "anti-poor" move disguised as a measure for decongestion. They just want to bring their cars to shuttle themselves and their kids to work/school — sounds like America innit?

Another example of patchwork politics, where people deserve better public transit and less car-dependent sprawl. (Want another one? Mandatory ROTC reserve military training for teens but no sign of improving civics education, or education in general.)

Motives notwithstanding, vehicle coding hasn't actually decreased traffic. What it does do is give the MMDA an excuse for why Metro Manila's traffic problem still hasn't been resolved. "We've instituted color coding, but drivers are just undisciplined or whatever it's not our fault."

number coding really just increases car and/or motorbike sales. Rich ppl can afford one car for every day, and middle to lower income families usually will take out car or motorbike loans (which opportunistic banks like BDO are more than happy to advertise)

The actual solutions to traffic, like investing in and maintaining reliable mass transit, are too expensive for a governmental bureaucracy and political class too used to neoliberal "outsource it to private sector/consumers' pockets".

Relocating business to other cities is equally risky, since businesses will only want to go to places that have the necessary infra and worker pops; the creation of which is probably even more expensive than mass transit, and local govts only care in sofar as they can get kickbacks and preferential pay to their wretched family businesses.

The majority of school-age children in the Philippines have returned to the classroom today:
Agence France-Presse via The Philippine Star wrote:Philippine classrooms reopen after more than two years

MANILA, Philippines — Millions of children in the Philippines returned to school as the academic year started on Monday, with many taking their seats in classrooms for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

The Philippines is one of the last countries in the world to resume full-time, in-person lessons -- sparking warnings that the prolonged closure of classrooms had worsened an education crisis in the country.

Children in masks and uniforms lined up for a temperature check and squirt of hand sanitiser at Pedro Guevara Elementary School in Manila, which had shut classrooms since March 2020.

The school has adopted a hybrid system of in-person and remote learning as it transitions its nearly 6,000 students back to face-to-face classes by November -- a deadline set by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr soon after he took office two months ago.

Grade six student Sophia Macahilig said she was "excited" to meet her classmates and teachers after two years of Zoom lessons.

"We used to have fun and now I can have fun again," 11-year-old Macahilig told AFP.

But many students have a lot of catching up to do.

Even before the pandemic, nine out of 10 Filipino children could "not read a simple text with comprehension" by age 10, the World Bank and other agencies said in a recent report.

Only 10 countries were worse off, including Afghanistan, Laos, Chad and Yemen.

I wouldn't really agree that Marcos Sr. was ever a hero, or was any positive, even in his prime or in his first term. He was already a fraudster even before he became President - he lied about his genealogy, he lied about the number of medals (33) that he received and being the "most decorated war hero of the Philippines", he lied about anything. He won because he was a "trapo" (political dynast) who exploited his personal connections for his own gain.

And to answer the Apollo10-lite narrative that his first term was somehow good in contrast to subsequent terms, his first term was a fiasco that was marked by excessive and exorbitant debt-spending on his populist infrastructure projects that soon led to an economic crisis and much of the social unrest that would plague his second term, and the Jabidah Massacre during his first term was the catalyst for Moro nationalism and the Moro conflict that would soon plague the Philippines afterwards.

In short, this man has no redeeming qualities whatsoever and shifting the narrative to that he had some fragments of positive or redeeming qualities whatsoever even in his prime (Or a wrong heel-face-turn narrative) is the start of an Apollo10 historical denialist and whitewashing narrative.
