Get hyped for the strike!

So when does Duterte declare the transport workers are trafficking drugs and orders them shot?

Ah, yes, I’ve checked his schedule and his speech for that should come on Monday.

Yes, and this administration's callousness with regards to the welfare of transport workers is about to exacerbate that problem with the jeepney modernization plan.

Although I agree with the platform that these jeepney must be modernized, the expenses are simply too much to pay for your average driver.

Just create a better train system dangit. Get a subway for once.

I can almost imagine a Chinese company monopolizing the jeepnys or the upgrading. Not like Duterte is bothered by Chinese invasion to begin with.

Ok? That's not really related to the Philippines.

There's a strike in the philippines, is there not?

I realized the philippines was in trouble when I realized that their president is a former serial killer and school shooter. It's like having John wayne gasey and eric Harris be president of the US at the same time

Which is exactly everybody else's concern when it comes to the modernization rollout. Putting the burden on transport workers is absolutely shameful, especially when the government can literally pay for every single jeep out of their own pocket. If they can increase the budget of the Office of the President, they can pay for the goddamn jeepney rollout.

Aint liberal late-stage capitalism grand? Push all the costs to the consumer (commuters) and the low-rung workers (drivers), maximum profit for whoever's building the e-jeepneys and the corrupt government lackeys supporting them.

TBF, this is a problem of the ENTIRE Filipino political class. Even the Liberals would do this.

This is why the entire class of kawatans and politicos need to go.

On an unrelated note: Japanese ultranationalism is quite annoying, especially when it gets to the part of the Japanese denying or downplaying what they did to our country.

At least Germany admitted that the holocaust happened. Japan still won't own up to its equally genocidal campaigns in the east

The LRT-2 is literally offline today and somehow the government thinks they're gonna be able to handle the jeepney modernization. Absolutely bonkers.

Filipinos in general tend to have no concept of maintenance or sustainment. That the LRT-2's electrics have worn down to the point they could cause fire was inevitable.

Maintenance and sustainment need to be trained and inculcated if we want to avoid a repeat.

While Douglas MacArthur did technically shield Emperor Hirohito from getting prosecuted (for entirely pragmatic reasons; if he had allowed Hirohito to be indicted chances are the occupation would be a lot more bloody), I'm not certain the trend of Japanese education towards revisionism was his doing (or that he could even do anything about it once he left).

Revisionism is an Asian thing; rare is the Asian government that will ever admit it made a mistake, especially massive ones.

Here in the Philippines, official government position is to cast blame on previous governments.

Apparently, the Santolan to Anonas segment will be out of commission for repairs due to the electrical fire that happened yesterday, for a maximum of 9 months.

First Star City, now LRT-2. Duterte visiting Russia is bad luck.

Absolutely no question almost every other political party would have also screwed over the jeepney drivers. That's what these elites do, whether they're from Luzon or Mindanao it doesn't matter, they all will stomp on us because that's what they do.

I have met and spoken to many jeepney drivers. I was surprised that a number of them were educated, having completed high school or college, and yet they were sadly driven to work as jeepney drivers. I was also impressed that some of them are becoming very professional, especially here in Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao.

My ex girlfriend is filipina and one thing that shocked me is how many people go to college in the philippines and then end up working some low wage dead end job. That's what a few decades of dictators can do to a nation

That's honestly not the worst hypothesis.

Because you can ALMOST GUARANTEE that whatever's going to rise out of what Star City left is going to be a bunch of condo buildings.

Of course transport's not going to get any favors from anybody in government. Not Tugade, not Delgra, certainly not Duterte. Not even the "opposition". Let's not forget that at the end of that, what rules Philippine politics is class interest. At the end of the day, jeepney drivers and operators can't rely on the government to prioritize mass-orientation rehabilitation over modernization. There's no money in rehabilitation. There's no money in PISTON's proposed replacement jeepney, compared to the ones DOTr is pushing with backing from foreign companies and manufacturers. Of course DOTr and LTFRB will push for the Omnibus Franchising Guidelines - it's LTFRB cooperatives and big businesses who'll make the most money out of franchise leasing. Not even LGU's are clear; they're the ones who can make businesses bid for limited franchises.

The transport strike was more than just a question of jeepney modernization. Of course we know jeeps are shit. But what kind of a replacement is a 1.6-2.4 million peso modern jeep that no driver could ever afford? Not only are the jeeps prohibitively expensive (and serve to line the profit margins of large manufacturers and foreign importers instead of local companies), individual drivers and operators get shafted out of their livelihoods because they can't get franchises without either subjecting themselves to a cooperative that will get pushed out by a company sooner than later, or joining a company and subjecting themselves to exploitative labor. Only then can they get the opportunity to get a "modern jeep", on a loan.

PUV modernization is a sham. The drivers know it, which was why September 30 was that effective. And you can bet more strikes will be coming. Transport strikes. Workers' strikes. Student walkouts. As long as the current exploitative system that benefits the few exists, there will be mass action. And time and again, we know that the masses always prevail in the end.
