The question is what does he gain from it other than maybe somehow preventing China from trying to start a war?

That might be all there is to it. I do not doubt that he wants what is good for the country, only he tends to express it in ways that make him not unlike those Westernized asskissers he loathes.

There's also no doubt that he admires the Chinese way of governing and has no truck with democracy, the very same democracy that has repeatedly let my country down, due to the haves having more of a say in how and where the money goes over the have-nots.

But -- then again -- might.

Nothing so elaborate -- simply birds of a feather tending to flock together, or in this case, authoritarians giving each other pats in the back.

This is the same guy who sang "Ikau" to Donnie Trump after calling Obama a son of a bitch.
Bloodthirsty savages who call for violence against the Right while simultaneously being unarmed defenseless sissies who will get slaughtered by the gun-toting Right in a civil war.

It's "Ikaw" (second-person singular term for "you", most probably a love song -- never had a great feeling for Pinoy love songs, now), which is something of a Duterte fave, in that he sings it whenever he's abroad, he's relaxed, and there's a karaoke nearby.

But that alone is a bad a reason. One is standing up to the PRC does not mean war.
The PRC is your typical bully, they prey on the weak who given in to them, and not the strong who stand up to them.
So actually making it clear the Philippines was willing to defend itself would reduce the chance of war.

Peace through strength. Vs victim hood through weakness.

Also had Duterte not completely alienated all the Philippines’ allies...

This is a situation he has only made much worse.

Zombie Ike/Teddy Roosevelt 2020.

Novus America represents my vision of an awesome Atompunk near future United States of America expanded to the entire North American continent, Guyana and the Philippines. The population would be around 700 million.
Think something like prewar Fallout, minus the bad stuff.

Politically I am an independent. I support what is good for the country, which means I cannot support either party.

Anyone who thinks he actually gives a shit about the safety of the common Filipino should be forcibly sterilized for being so gullible and mentally deficient.

As I've said in a previous post, Duterte is the point man for an entire caboodle of local elites who stand to gain significantly from Chinese "investment", business and exploitation of the Philippines. They will compromise national sovereignty and interest to get that sweet chinese kickbacks and capital into *their* localities, fuck the rest of the country.

Any progress or poverty reduction is incidental; they would much prefer the stupid masses actually drown if it leads to more wealth and power.

To facilitate this, they have manipulated and influenced him into believing the worst of the "China will take over the world" propaganda, namely that the PRC is or will be all-powerful and that they're craven enough to bomb tributaries that don't show proper deference.

He has also been supported by a disgusting liberal academe/intelligentsia who have been trained to abhor war and assertive state policy at all cost in favor of an insipid "if its good for big business then who cares?" attitude. Yes, these same people later whine and bitch about human rights, but hey thats politics for you.
LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR YOU. HATE.

Spoiler alert: it won't. It just gives China more excuse to take more and more territory until we lose all claims. I mean, we've opted to not stop them from getting what they want, what's to say they'll magically give it all back afterwards?

Duterte forgot about the time-tested adage: Give an inch and they'll take a mile.

Trump was the ultimate republican. He came off sounding like a damn Nazi while selling out tradition and middle America at the same time. There is no wall, drug prices are climbing again, the opioid crisis rages on, catch and release is still in full effect, his administration is staffed with one percenters and neocons. Trump was the system's way of releasing a pressure valve, not a true revolutionary, and an unbiased view of trump would reveal neither a raging racist ideologue nor a hero for conservatism, but instead just a con artist who made promises he couldn't and wouldn't keep and demonized countless Americans from the middle eastern people of new jersey to our news media, just because a large amount of Americans are so stupid, they'll sacrifice their freedoms and liberty so they can get back at the brown people and show the media who's boss. They'll cut off their nose to spite their face. I feel for those who voted for trump because they wanted their jobs back or who voted for him cause the only other option was the lizard woman, but the die hard trump supporters did everything in their power hoping this guy was gonna bring pain and death to thousands of fellow americans, and instead he took them for a ride and left them in the dust. i have no sympathy for those people. It's business as usual in america and probably always will be

In that case, and since this could also apply in the Philippines too anyway with a similar political state we're in, what really enables change?

Tbh probably nothing. Think of how power corrupts. During the era of rome, the patricians held power while the plebians were kept down. When Rome fell, the feudal lords became the dominant power and controlled the serfs. Over time a middle class formed out of knights, artisians and traders. Starting during the renaissance the artisans and traders replaxed the feudal lord descended kings as the power class, and became the burgeoisie. The serfs were meanwhile replaced by industrial laborers in factories, mines and textile mills known as the proleteriat. Karl Marx soon advocated overthrowing the burgeosie and establishing a classless society, but in places like Russia and China where the revolution actually arrived, the communists quickly became the ruling class that dominated and oppressed everyone else and who held special privileges others didnt. In Russia, the communists were eventually overthrown and an oligarchy made up of Vladimir Putin and his oil billionaire cronies took their place. In the end, when the original corrupt rulers are overthrown, New crooks take their place. That's the human condition
