So the Phillippines is a forecast for what a possible second Trump term would turn out like.

Perhaps we should make a thread for ASEAN, we could keep it alive if ever need be.

There are a handful of other SE Asians here on NSG too.

How is the job market in the philippines? It seems like a lot of filipinos go to college but then end up working at like Jolibees, and there also seems to be a lot of filipino expats working abroad, so is there a lack of jobs down there or something?

Sidenote: I too was doing what you were doing, going to college on a scholarship, but I had to drop out cause it was only a $5000 scholarship and tuition was $9000. The fact I managed to stay in school for two years and work enough to drag things out that long is a miracle

It's crazy. Employers often post things like "10-15 years experience" and other crap, which is ironic given that at this rate no one is gonna get any experience at all.

While there are quite a number of those that end up in Jollibee, a big chunk of college graduates (and much of the middle class) end up being overseas workers for decades because the opportunities here are scarce, and when they are present, the salary is absolute trash compared to other places. Like, really, teachers and nurses are chronically underpaid but their equivalents in Europe are paid three times as much.

I myself would be teaching music and English to Russians after 10 or so years, so have at it.

Well, not to the point of making one of the world's biggest Diaspora populations ever.

A lot of us who manage to get an education leave the country and don't come back as we have this thinking that "why should I return to this place when it sucks so much."

My ex girlfriend had an aunt living in Belgium and she said "she doesn't visit the philippines often."

Hmm, I wonder why. It's not like Belgium is a cleaner, safer and wealthier country where you can actually survive

I imagine Duhon is saying that he has slept with sex workers who have more dignity and self-control than the congressmen (or 'tongressmen, after kotong, a colloquial term for bribes) who voted for giving unlimited foreign ownership of key economic sectors in exchange for even more money that won't go to anything productive (unless you think mansions, bridges to nowhere, and more basketball courts is actually good for the economy).

IMO, even in a "perfect" world where foreign investors/corporations have no interest other than pure profit, this would be dangerous in the long-term without the right checks and balances.

In the real world we live in, with CPC-connected PRC businessmen buying up everything in the world that isn't nailed down (and even those that are) and are indoctrinated/coerced into promoting Xi Jingping's sick totalitarian Confucian imperialism as inevitable and something the "lesser barbarians" should just accept...

Yeah, this is a disaster in the making.

privatising vital public services like ramos did in the 1990s was already a shit idea, now this?

it's one thing to be fleeced by corporate giants even with 60-40, yet another to be a neocolonial puppet

vivendi et al just want the kaching, xi poohbah wants his east asian co-coercive sphere, chinese style -- and how fucking apropos is it that media outlets reported a scare about the chinese hijacking our electronic networks? i dismissed that shit as more sinophobic scaremongering, but goddamn that's actually a scenario worth fearing about now

Slutshaming also works. It would have been accurate, given how you literally did not need to compare public services to prostituted women to have to make your fucking point.

i chose them as i have experience with them -- decent people who do it to raise their kids or feed their families or pay tuition, the whole lot of them -- and thus can make the comparison

i did not intend to marginalize them, and comparing them to these politicking scumbags on the make favorably won't marginalize them
