Is building the Cebu-Bohol bridge a good idea?

In theory, a land linkage between the two islands is good. Considering Cebu's existence as a transport hub and Bohol's status as a tourist draw it would certainly be useful.

In practice... I'm not very certain. It is certainly a large engineering and economic risk. Also, if the point is to improve bulk transfers of goods or people, a train bridge would be more sensible in the long term than a bridge for wheeled vehicles. Encouraging more private cars is not only environmentally bad, but one has to worry about what should happen if the poor bastards break down in the middle of said bridge.

Its not the worst project under "Build Build Build".

PRC ships aren't benevolent.

However I will be very surprised if they will annex any place not in the Spratly.

Because it takes a ship to travel from one island to another since other than the Japanese-built Samar-Leyte Bridge during Marcos no two major PH islands actually get connected to each other by bridge or tunnel. Moreover PH suffers from a lot of typhoons.

Moar questions:

1. Why does PH have so many provinces? A lot of new provinces had been created since independence. My working theory is that this is caused by all kinds of political dynasties trying to expand the amount of posts for themselves. This may have led to the creation of Sarangani and Davao Occidental for example. Is this correct?

2. What's your opinion on my RPing in this game related to PH? viewtopic.php?f=5&t=470073 I claim that one of the great-grandchildren of Marcos, Anthony Marcos is Mr. President in 2061 and one (actually moar lol if we count local representatives etc) of his relatives, Ms. Maria Manatoc-Marcos, is the Governor of Ilocos Norte and that just like Bongbong Marcos in 2016 their support is mostly based in Ilocanos & other folks in northern Luzon. Is there anything odd here?

Yeah, I knew that.

Buuut, there are actually projects to connect some more islands with bridges again, like the bridge plan to connect Negros Occidental to Guimaras.

The boat part is because the Philippines has just a lot of irregular boat incidents, even though the regulations are getting more stringent.

It is yet another set of proposed Japanese bridges that are going to be built by China?

Do you guys take boats a lot? Or..wealthier people take planes while ordinary people take boats? Do you guys sleep on boats? Say..if I'm in Davao and want to go to Manila. What shall I do? Like...drive/take a bus from Davao to Surigao, take a boat to San Ricardo in Leyte, drive to Matnog on Samar, take a boat to Allen and finally drive to Manila?

The most recent one with five ships is a recon/intel-gathering mission, since one of said ships is an electronics and signals intelligence sampling ship, and one other ship was some kind of oceanographic research mothership.

They're mapping out our waterways, including any underwater valleys or features. It'll help their submarines when they go hiding or sneaking around. Its also practice for them to sail long distances; save for a few ships in the Gulf of Aden battling pirates and the ones who do port visits, the bulk of the PLAN has been largely confined to coastal or near seas.

The one with the carrier Liaoning is basically a test run for silent carrier operations under our noses. Its a lame test, because our maritime awareness has been deliberately underfunded for years anyway. I'd be more impressed if they tried that on the American West Coast, or Russian Siberian Coast.

Neko-koku wrote:Hmm..fair enough. Do folks break down in the middle of the Samar-Leyte bridge or Cebu-Cordova ones?

Those are shorter bridges than the proposed Cebu-Bohol one. Aid and towing can come faster there.

That is essentially correct. As far as I know, all provincial/regional formation in the Philippines is inherently poltically motivated. You would be served to treat any justification for them on economic, developmental, cultural, or security grounds to be on bad faith.

A good example is the recent splitting of Palawan into three provinces. A pointless exercise meant only to give the major families there a slice of the pie.

The present support base of the Marcos family is famously concentrated in Ilocos, but they're just the hard core of fanatics who did benefit (even if marginally) from their rule. Depending on how (in)competent the specific Marcos in question is, you could get more or less supporters from other sectors, particular from entitled scum who didn't suffer or forgot Martial Law, ultraconservative idiots who deluded themselves into thinking Marcos presided a golden age from beginning to end, or opportunistic people who just think you're gonna be big so may as well latch on to you like a leech.

Most RPs which involve a Philippines as a player tend to be insane unrealistic fantasies (both the RP in general and the Philippines being played) anyway so there's nothing special with what you're doing. Hell, your specifc RP has mutant cats. So....

Certainly the Philippines needs to vastly increase its naval surveillance, patrol and denial capabilities.

It is basically defenseless from air and sea attacks.

While I generally agree, I don't think that was the main reason for Palawan specifically, though I can be wrong. Palawan has been for the past few decades a stronghold for environmental causes, especially during the tenure of former Puerto Princesa mayor Edward Hagedorn. As far as I'm aware it's the only place in the Philippines that has environmentalist militias - which in my opinion are great, more communities need to be armed and given the capability to defend themselves from the encroachment of private entities looking to carve up the land for personal profit, looking to evict them from their ancestral homes (or just looking to evict them) in the name of profit, or just because the government thinks bombing Muslims is a good way to spend tax pesos.

Lots of private companies have been eyeing Palawan for years now, but strong opposition to exploitation has prevented them from coming in. Splitting the island up into three provinces, I believe, helps divide the once-united opposition. They can't make their headway into Puerto Princesa? That's fine, let's just move into the much less populated - and presumably much weaker defended - other province of Palawan del Norte.

I'm sure gerrymandering has something to do with it, but I believe, just for Palawan, the motive is less about power and more about exploitation and profit-seeking.

Although the referendum on this isn't until 2020, I'm hoping (praying) that the people of Palawan reject this attempt to divide them.

Wouldn't know about how to get to Manila from Davao by sea, seeing as I hail from Cebu.

In my experience, though, which means of travel we use depends on distance; we fly to/from Manila (or Davao, for that matter, but I haven't been there, so don't quote me on that) and take a boat within the Visayas. With fast movers, sleep isn't much of an option, but with the slow ones, it's practically a necessity--especially if you leave at 2200.

Most do take boats when travelling, given the cheaper costs. Some rides will also take quite long, say 2 days, so lots of people do (sometimes have) to sleep on the boats. I haven’t been on a boat cabin (unless I forgot), but I’ve stayed in a boat for a substantial amount of my time.

For your Davao question, from what looks to be feasible, it’s best to head on to Northern Mindanao, maybe take a ferry from Misamis, CDO or Butuan then get to Cebu or Ilo-Ilo, transfer to a ship going to Batangas Port and drive or commute to Manila.

But we tend to fly on a plane now.

Looks like the transport workers are going on strike. I can feel they're already just a few steps away from calling the strike a ploy by the opposition - nevermind the fact that the opposition absolutely loathes workers only slightly less than Duterte and would never be caught dead actually supporting a strike.
