The downside of living where you live

Postby Cabra West » Sat Mar 06, 2010 3:47 pm

I was just thinking about it... I love living in Ireland, I really do. But there are some downsides to it as well as all the upsides.
Mostly, being a vegetarian here is sometimes tricky, very few restaurants have heard of the concept. Some have, and I've been eating great vegetarian food here, but on the whole those are a clear minority.
Another downside is public transport. It's acceptable in Dublin, but once you leave the capital it's simply a joke. And not a very funny one, either.
I also somewhat dislike the influence the Catholic church still has on schools here. We're planning on reproducing eventually, and looking at the schools in our area, I predict we'll be in for some fun-filled years once we let our sprogs loose on the clergy....

So, what are the downsides about living where you live?
"I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, and as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged on to a half-submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature’s wonders: mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that’s when I first learned about evil. It is built in to the very nature of the universe. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior."

Living in Oakland, I may get shot if I wander into the wrong part of the grid. That, and there are a lot of freaking hills! Walking around here is tough on a smoker.

Uhm, the daily danger of getting shot, hands down. Living in one of the top three crimce capitals of the world, well...

How unclean everything is.

Having water only 6 hours a day.

Having electrical power 16 hours a day.

Traffic. Having to drive one hour and a half to go to work, and then 2 hours back home.

Rude, uneducated people everywhere.

Yeah, this place is a clot of manure. No wonder I'm moving.

All the clubs with nice, decent patrons are crap.

I could say the weather, but, after living most of my life in Southern California with it's 90^F winters, it's smog and the unremitting humidity with precious little rain, I'd be lying. I like the snow and cold in the winter and real seasons. No, it's the fact that, while the people here are, for the most part nice, friendly, and generally polite, they're, for the most part, Christian Right. As an agnostic Pagan Taoist who does not believe in organized religion, I find myself up against some real walls as they smile and smile and attempt to beat me to death with feathers.

Where I live, ingnorant people are everywhere. Some people don't like my family and I simply from lies that our neighbor tells customers about how he is harassed, while we are the ones who have been harassed for three years. With that the, only good side really is rain, snow, sun, and the few decent people you meet. Even though we have moved to the next town over, it all still follows us in some way.

I live up on the Niagara Escarpment of Wisconsin. It's mostly farmland. It's mostly flat. It's windy as fuck. Winter sucks here.

I know, I am mentally preparing for this... but given both mine and their prospective father's distinct dislike of authority, I do have hopes that having to send them to a school like that will focus their energy against them and not us ;)

There are far too many to list. However the main one would be the lack of anonymity that you have in a town of 3000 people. Everyone knows you, everyone knows where you live and what you had for dinner last night. Its disconcerting for someone who has lived in a city all her life.
When you grow up, your heart dies.

Public Transportation is a joke
This state is poorer then most
we compensate with low cost of living, low taxes, dirt cheap property.
I like it more then I dislike it.

Well, the Civil Partnership Bill is on its way, so that would be the first step nearly complete.
And I'm sure the Irish will manage high heels eventually. I think if they weren't so ambitious about utterly ridiculous heights, it would be far easier for most... ;)
