And still did for a really long period after the empire fell - there was an anecdote I read that during the First Balkan War when Greek soldiers occupied an Aegean island that was under the control of the Ottomans, a group of kids stared at them as they walked past. The soldiers asked the kids what they were looking at, and they answered 'Hellenes'. When the Greeks asked who the kids were, they answered 'Rhomaioi' - Romans.
