Because (and I am just reading between the lines) he is a homophobic prick and he just can't hid that fact any more.
Oh c'mon. He voted in favor of LGBT rights and did a lot of good stuff for their community. He slipped up a few times because he was like "well, I'm christian so personally..."
Like, yeah, whatever, that's his prerogative if he wants to be grossed out by it personally. If he allies with them in the House of Commons, which he very clearly did, I'm not gonna judge him for that.
But that's my problem. Why, if he has no issue with it politically, and if he has supported gay rights for so long politically, is he standing down now? Why, now, is his faith suddenly SO important to him that he can't ignore it any more?
And why is his faith causing him so many problems? I know a metric fuckton of Christians who personally, professionally, politically and in every other way you can imagine don't think being gay is a sin, don't use their religion to judge others, don't look down on people and basically don't behave like sanctimonious pricks just because they have an imaginary friend that was born two thousand years ago that tells them they can, so the fact that his personal feelings make him unsuitable to be leader just makes him a homophobic prick and he can fuck off.
