In 2002, that would've been impossible.

I don't know why anyone is surprised, she was behind 20% in the polls. The only reason she made it this far is because there were so many candidates that the vote was split, and her base was enough to carry her to the run-offs, but no further.

This is why I support run off elections.

Edit: The polls were still wrong, she got even less votes then they thought she would.

I don't see any evidence supporting that claim, Macron won by a third of the vote, quite a large margin.

Yeah. Macron outperformed his polls more than Trump or Brexit. Wanna bet no one remembers that next time a reactionary populist is in with a shot somewhere?

According to this source: French joblessness runs at 10 percent, which compares with an average of 8.0 percent across the EU and just 3.9 percent in neighbouring Germany. Macron wants to cut unemployment to seven percent by 2022 by liberalising employment laws, cutting business rates and loosening restrictions in France's 35-hour working week. Macron has also said he wants to reinforce the EU's external borders and has called for a major increase in resources for the Frontex agency. He plans to tour European capitals during his first months in charge to set out a "five-year roadmap to give the eurozone a true budget and to create a Europe of 27 for the environment, industry and managing migration". Macron has also said he is determined to develop European defence by coordinating operations and industrial programmes in this area.

If Macron means to tighten border security and not continue the open border polices, than that is good for Europe. If he means to continue the open border policies than that is bad. Which means, Marine Le Pen, the National Front Party and others across Europe, will have another chance.

With the failure of Hofer, Wilders, and now Le Pen, with the AfD on track for failure, I think the right wing populist surge has now begun its decline.

6 threads on the front page of reddit about the Macron win.

Possibly because TD supported Le Pen?

100% of the vote is now in, I think. And for what it's worth, Macron even outperformed the standard exit poll by like 0.3%. He underperformed a couple ones, but for the most part, it was all on par.
