Simply using the word "mansplaining" does not make it impossible for men to defend themselves, as demonstrated by the fact that we have male posters in this very thread defending their points of view. Obviously, the discourse was not shut down.

But that fails to identify what a feminist hopes to do, compared to what critics of feminism actually will do when confronted with that particular snarl word. Individuals who are not as critical of feminism (or more specifically, the third-rate feminists who tend to throw around the snarl word) are likely to be less capable of ignoring the slur.

It really annoys me when people do this. He wasn't referring to absolutely every single feminist everywhere. Just in general. It would be like me saying democrats support gun control. Does every single one? No, but most do.

That's why words like some are important. Also, I believe gun control is in the Democratic platform, thus saying democrats as a party support gun control would be accurate. Control is not part of the feminist platform (in general) and thus it would not be correct to say that feminists support control.

That really just seems like a cheap deflection. There's no reason to assume someone is referring to everyone in a movement unless they specifically say so. I'll use a better example than my first. Most Native Americans are extremely liberal. I am not. Does that make the first statement untrue? No, and I wouldn't complain if someone made the first generalization. So why must we play semantics?

Nobody said it was. But that doesn't change the fact that it isn't needed. It's done to prevent infection in that region, something that can also be done by teaching young men how to wash properly.

No but then you said most. If you had said Native Americans are liberal then I would have objected, because that is not always the case. Semantics are important, especially in cases like this where all people are implicated in a sentence. Had I said native Americans are are alcoholics with low IQs this would have implied all Native Americans are alcoholics with low IQs, not some. I see no difference in terms of implication with that statement and the one CF made, and I would have been properly warned for all X are Y.

Correct, and I choose to respond to you by suggesting that either your statement is inaccurate or you are using sloppy language. Neither of those are control. If what I did was control then what you did was also control.
