Meanwhile, in South Korea...

Postby Sanctissima » Sat Nov 12, 2016 9:24 am

Haven't seen a thread for this yet, so I thought I'd do the honours.

The hub-bub of a Trump victory in the US election aside, there's been quite a stir in South Korea recently, with mass protests in Seoul calling for the president's abdication.

Image

The story behind these protests is one of the juiciest bits of political gossip I've seen in a long, long time. Hell, it's full of so much drama that if I didn't know any better, I'd think it was the plot to a cheap Korean soap opera.

As it turns out, the president of South Korea, Park Geun-hye, has her own grey eminence, Choi Soon-sil, the leader of a shamanistic cult who's been heavily influencing national policy since the president's election in 2012.

This all came to light after a series of investigations involving corruption and academic fraud at a prestigious South Korean university. Basically, a young Korean horse rider tried to get enrolled in said university, but lacked the grades and academic standing to do so. Her mother, being very rich, managed to get her enrolled regardless, creating a scholarship in equestrianism for her daughter to avoid arousing suspicion. Months passed, and the daughter failed most of her courses, eventually taking temporary leave from the university. In the meantime, the mother did some bribing and pulled a few strings to get her daughter's academic average up to snuff. Some other things happened, but they're not terribly important, and to make a long story short this coincided with a lot of other questionable things happening in the Korean post-secondary education system, which led to minor protests on campus.

Journalists arrived, some investigations happened, and what would have been the subject of a small news column or a page-long article suddenly exploded into a full-on political scandal when it was discovered that the girl's mother and the president were close friends. Not only that, but the girl's mother also turned out to be a member of a religious cult, of which the president is closely acquainted. The more journalists dug, the more dirt was dug up, and now it turns out the cult's shamanistic leader was the mentor of Park Chung-hee, a former president and father of the current president Park Geun-hye. This has all led to massive protests and public outcry calling for the president's resignation, whose current public approval rating is hovering between 5-10%.

Here's an article on the protests, for those who are interested:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/11/12/half-a-million-protesters-rally-in-seoul-to-demand-resignation-o/

I don't so much have an opinion on this, as I find it more interesting and nonsensical than anything. I suppose my own opinion is that the world seems to slowly be turning into a parody of itself.

TL,DR: South Korea is secretly run by a shamanistic cult leader.

They're this upset because their President had an unofficial advisor?

To be honest, this has more to do with the president's general unpopularity than anything. At the end of the day, this is just the straw that broke the camel's back.

It feeds into a narrative that SK is actually run by unelected elites through informal patronage/familial/oligarchic (read: corrupt) systems. That is what they're really protesting about, and is why relatively minor incidents (such as the airline nut one) become focal points of outrage.

I think it was always been like that. The current President was the daughter of the dictator that led South Korea for around 18 years.

The resentment of this perceived system is relatively recent, though no less intense for all that.

Clinton is also a member of a religious cult, so the US isn't so different. 0.2% different.

When they bashing on methodists like

In general, this seems to be the final straw for an already-unpopular government. With massive assaults against organized labour, disrespect for freedom of association, and historical revisionism, the government has definitely pissed a lot of people off lately. Add to that minor stuff like the thing with the nuts, the attempted rehabilitation of the President's pseudo-fascist dad, and the perceptions of extreme insiderism, and you get some really bad optics. I hope this government falls as soon as possible, and something better comes out of it.

From what I gather she should resign from her position. The link to a serious breach and highly suspected fraud have tarnished her reputation beyond the point of salvage.

She's not just an unofficial advisor. She's a shaman whose family has been controlling the president through emotional manipulation ever since Park's mother was shot in a botched assassination attempt on her father.

She has obtained millions through graft, made her friends rich through manipulation of the president, influenced her NK policy by telling her that NK would collapse in 2017, got Park to sue a foreign journalist for defamation, receive Park's budget proposals and ensure government contracts for her friends, used her influence to ensure her daughter entrance into an elite university, and so much more.

I can't say I've been paying as close of attention as I should (been busy ignoring reality since Tuesday), but I have to say what I've heard is not encouraging.

South Korea, you have one job: don't let North Korean propaganda be true.

That's all you have to do to be the "good guys." To be totally and unambiguously in the right. And you keep fucking it up.

Err, what?

Obviously. I'm not saying that making friends or getting to know people is evil. What I'm saying is that using these connections (friends/family/schoolmates/business partners/etc.) to get things done for you (get an important internship or job, a business contract, and so on) is something that's also present in the West.

I mean, we have sayings like "it's all about who you know."
